It’s not magic. It’s policy. We often hear that the Netherlands is unique, that "it won't work here." Cambridge, Massachusetts just proved that wrong. In 2019, they required the construction of separated bike lanes when streets are being reconstructed. In 2023, the results were in: 🚲 +34% increase in daily cycle commuting. 🤕 -84% drop in severe, incapacitating injuries. 🚶🏾♀️Up to 80 percent fewer cyclists ride on sidewalks, resulting in fewer accidents between pedestrians and cyclists. 👦🏽 3.5x more children and cargo bikes on the street. That last number is the real victory. When the kids show up, you know the street is actually safe. Cambridge didn’t wait for the culture to change. They changed the policy, and the culture followed. The largest city in 🇨🇭, Zurich, has just opened a dedicated bicycle tunnel connecting districts 4 and 5, running beneath the main train station—a project years in the making and a milestone for urban cycling safety and convenience. Originally built about 40 years ago for cars, this tunnel has been repurposed to provide a fast, weather-protected, and direct bike route through the city centre, encouraging sustainable mobility and reducing car traffic downtown. Imagine a city that prioritises people over the vehicles they use. It arranges your steps, your cardio, and even the morning sun as if it were curating your calories. Where bicycles lead the morning rush and pavement conversations are enabled by design, you find a city that lives differently. You find Copenhagen. But the city did not always feel this way. Its transformation began in the 1960s, when the city council stopped vehicular access to a 1.1-kilometre central street called Strøget. It was a temporary experiment at first. But by 1964, it had become a permanent car-free zone. Over time, the pedestrian network expanded into adjacent streets and squares, creating a calm, walkable core at the heart of the old city. This was enabled chiefly by the work of architect Jan Gehl, who has one enduring insight: “The most important scale is the People Scale. The city at eye level and at 5km/hour. This knowledge has been lost by planners and architects.” What happened next was telling. Gehl was involved in bringing out the space’s potential for human interaction. Retail did not suffer. It improved. Public life grew richer. Noise dropped. Air quality got better. The success of Strøget proved that car-free design can strengthen both commerce and community. From there, Copenhagen began to shift. Neighbourhoods reorganised around walking and cycling. Today, the city has more than 382 kilometres of dedicated cycle tracks, supported by a broader mobility model inspired by the historic Finger Plan, a structure where the central “palm” remains a low-traffic zone while major access roads and public transit hubs sit along the “fingers.” From above, the city shows clean lines, generous paths and intentional design. Move closer and you see how people use actually use it. Nearly 49 percent of all commuter trips to work or school are made by bicycle. On the busiest bridges, such as Queen Louise’s Bridge, more than 40,000 cyclists cross every day, moving in quiet streams guided by signals tuned to their pace. Step closer still and you hear the soft roll of tyres, the low hum of conversation and an everyday ease in the air. People walk more, sleep better and live longer. They report some of the highest life satisfaction levels in the world. Copenhagen demonstrates a simple truth: good urban design does more than shape cities. It shapes behaviour. It makes better living the natural outcome, not a daily effort.

TfNSW’s new shared e-bike parking & enforcement powers are the moment to fix our kerbside priorities. What looks like “bike clutter” is really a capacity problem created by streets that were designed to store cars—not bikes. Key takeaways: 🚲 Private bikes > shared bikes. The brightly coloured fleets are just the tip. The bigger surge is everyday private bikes for shops, school runs and station access. Plan for both—or footpaths cop it. Based on Paris, there are over 70 private bikes for each shared bike. 🚲 Footpaths are for people. Move bike parking off the footpath and into the carriageway (where car storage lives) using marked bays/corrals. 🚲 One bay = ~10 bikes. Convert just 1–2% of on-street car parks in each centre into bike corrals/hubs and you unlock thousands of tidy, secure parks—without narrowing footpaths. 🚲 Lower speeds → more riders. As 40km/h/30km/h expands on local streets, more cautious riders say “yes” (kids, seniors, new riders). That’s induced demand for good—and it needs parking ready to go. Community dividend: clearer footpaths for prams and mobility users, calmer crossings, room for trees/shade, and stronger local retail (riders and walkers stop and spend). A simple playbook for councils & the state: 🚲 Reallocate 1–2% of car park bays near stations, schools and main streets to bike corrals/hubs (cargo-friendly, lock-to racks). 🚲 Set rules & enforce like car parking (time limits where needed; operator obligations for shared and delivery fleets). 🚲 Measure & scale: track occupancy; expand only where bays exceed ~70% utilisation. 🚲 Make it visible: stencil the truth—“THIS BAY = 10 BIKES”—and show before/after footpath clearance. This isn’t a crackdown on bikes. It’s a clean-up of kerbside priorities so the good kind of growth—healthier trips, quieter streets, stronger high streets—can snowball. It’s no secret Beijing policymakers completely abandoned the bicycle decades ago, handing their streets over to the automobile in the name of prosperity. But in recent years, those policymakers have done a stunning reversal, reallocating significant amounts of that space in the name of liveability. Motivated by the COVID-19 pandemic, starting in 2020, Beijing's transportation department introduced the development concept of "slow travel first, public transportation first, and green first"; implementing a three-year plan to continually improve the quality of the walking and cycling environment. Embodying the Dutch principles of cohesion, directness, safety, comfort and attractiveness; Beijing's network plan totals 220 kilometres in six districts, including a commitment to build a bike lane on every road more than 12 metres wide, and bike priority street (or "fietsstraat") on narrower ones. "Bicycles reflect a city's sustainable development its level of modern civilization. They take the least time to travel short distances, and can be used as a connecting tool between trains and buses, thereby expanding public transport's coverage." - Wang Shuling, Beijing Transport Research Institute. The policy shift is already yielding results: according to ITDP, (e-)cyclists in Beijing now represent 23% of commuters who have shifted from a car as their primary mode. This has contributed to an annual fuel consumption reduction of 60 million litres and decrease in CO2 emissions of 240,000 tons.

Details: Between 2018 and 2023, Paris experienced an incredible 240% surge in bicycle traffic, a transformation that reshaped how millions move across the city. A recent study by Alexandre Lanvin, Jean Charléty, Guillaume FERREOL, Anatole Homann, Elliot Massey, Alix Vermeulen, and Alexandre Chasse in the Journal of Cycling and Micromobility Research explores how public policies made this possible — and what truly drives sustainable cycling growth (link in comments). The findings are clear: infrastructure leads the way. The single most important factor behind Paris’s cycling success was the expansion of protected bike lanes, supported by more secure parking and a rapidly growing bike-sharing network (Vélib’). Together, these investments built trust, safety, and convenience — the foundations of everyday cycling. But the study also shows that success doesn’t come from infrastructure alone. Growth accelerated when cycling was made more pleasant and accessible through pedestrian zones, new green spaces, and the rise of e-bikes, which opened cycling to longer commutes and a broader population. Policies that made car use more difficult, such as low-emission zones and rising fuel prices, also played a role — though with social trade-offs that cities must manage carefully. Interestingly, the much-discussed ban on e-scooters had almost no effect on cycling levels. 💡 Key takeaway: Paris’s experience shows that sustainable cycling growth isn’t about a single silver bullet — it’s about creating a balanced ecosystem. Build safe, connected infrastructure first; enhance liveability and inclusivity next; and align restrictions with fairness. I've been explaining gold-standard infrastructure to the public and this is the one where they see the full picture: when a developer invests in permanent, built infrastructure, cities get Class IV facilities that last. This is one of the most complete protected intersection designs in the U.S., right here at Park Avenue and Almaden Boulevard in Downtown San Jose. Built by Adobe as part of their development mitigation, this intersection showcases the gold standard in intersection design, integrating safety, stormwater management, and mobility for all modes. This is what I tell the public about infrastructure progression: cities start with quick-builds. Paint, posts, plastic show the design. When private investment gets involved, that's when we lock in permanent upgrades. Why this is a best practice example: Raised Intersection where both crosswalk and bikeway are elevated to sidewalk level, enhancing visibility and slowing turning vehicles. Corner Safety Island where bikes wait in a protected corner pocket, safely buffered by curb protection and concrete. Truck Apron designed for turning radii, slowing larger vehicles while accommodating movement, key for reducing high-speed turns. Proper Offset where geometry aligns cars perpendicular to bike crossings, improving sightlines and reducing conflict points. Bioswales and a French Drain manage runoff while creating green infrastructure that improves stormwater quality and the pedestrian environment. Two-Stage Turn Boxes enabling safe, predictable crossings in two phases, making bikes move like pedestrians across major intersections. Green Paint and High-Visibility Crosswalks ensuring legibility for everyone: drivers, cyclists, and scooter users. This isn't a quick-build with posts and paint. This is a fully built Class IV facility, developed with long-term infrastructure in mind. This is what I explain to the public: protected intersection means raised, concrete, built to last. People said nobody would ever give up their car. Paris proved them wrong. 🚲🇫🇷 For years, we were told that cycling would always be a niche activity. The data now tells a different story. In central Paris: 🚲 Bikes account for 11.2% of trips 🚗 Cars have fallen to just 4.3% During rush hour, the gap gets even bigger: 🚲 Bikes: nearly 19% of journeys 🚗 Cars: just 6.6% And the biggest winner of all? 🚶 Walking, with more than half of all trips. This didn’t happen because people suddenly became more environmentally conscious. It happened because the city changed the system. Over the past decade, Paris: 🌳 Replaced parking spaces with trees and public spaces 🚴 Built more than 300 km of protected bike lanes 🌊 Turned major roads along the Seine into pedestrian areas The lesson is bigger than cycling. What is a 15-Minute City? 🌎 A 15-Minute City is an urban planning model that redefines the relationship between people and their cities by prioritizing proximity, accessibility, and livability. It ensures that residents can meet most of their daily needs—work, education, healthcare, shopping, and recreation—within a 15-minute walk or bike ride. This approach not only reduces car dependency but also addresses broader challenges such as urban congestion, social inequality, and environmental degradation. Paris has emerged as a global example of this concept in action. One of its most transformative projects was converting the right bank of the Seine River from a traffic-heavy highway into a car-free urban park. This space, once dominated by vehicles, is now used for cycling, walking, and leisure activities.
