5 Steps to Protect Yourself From Burnout (And Toxic Work Environments) I lost my first company to burnout. It wasn't just mental—it was biological. What nobody tells you: ↳ Burnout begins in your brain long before you notice symptoms ↳ 77% of employees face burnout—but most ignore the warning signs ↳ Your body keeps the score when your mind refuses to ↳ Recovery is scientific, not just "self-care" Here's how to protect your brain and career: 1. Know the Red Flags Your nervous system speaks before your mind admits there's a problem: ↳ Sunday scaries that start on Friday ↳ Physical symptoms: headaches, digestive issues, sleep disruption ↳ Dreading tasks you once enjoyed ↳ Emotional disconnection from colleagues and loved ones The biology: Chronic stress depletes your prefrontal cortex, impairing decision-making before you notice. 2. Identify the Source The real causes are often hidden: ↳ Micromanagement triggers your brain's threat response ↳ Unclear expectations create constant cortisol release ↳ Boundary violations deplete your cognitive resources ↳ Leadership dysfunction cascades through organizations Most revealing question: Would you want your child to work in your environment? 3. Document Everything Your overwhelmed brain will gaslight you—create external evidence: ↳ Track stress triggers and physical responses ↳ Note management interactions that drain vs. energize ↳ Record accomplishments (your brain will forget them) ↳ Measure energy levels throughout each day The science: Externalization reduces cognitive load and creates objective patterns you can't see when overwhelmed. 4. Set Boundaries Your brain requires recovery periods to function optimally: ↳ Create transition rituals between work and home ↳ Define work hours and honor them religiously ↳ Practice saying "no" to protect your energy ↳ Turn off notifications during deep work and rest The neuroscience: Boundary setting activates your parasympathetic nervous system, essential for recovery. 5. Take Action Moving from victim to agent changes your brain chemistry: ↳ Speak with HR strategically (document these conversations) ↳ Find mentors who've navigated similar situations ↳ Consider role changes—lateral moves often beat promotions ↳ Prioritize brain health above career advancement Remember: You spend most of your waking hours working. A bad environment doesn't just ruin your career—it rewires your brain. I stayed in toxic environments far too long. The recovery took years. Don't make my mistake. She stopped replying to work emails after 6 PM—and here's what happened. They used to pride themselves on being available 24/7. Emails at 10 PM? No problem. Weekend calls? Bring it on. But over time, they noticed: - Increased fatigue - Decreased productivity - Strained personal relationships One day, they decided enough was enough. They set clear boundaries: - No emails after 6 PM - Weekends are off-limits - Vacations are for recharging The initial anxiety was real. Would they miss something urgent? Would their team feel unsupported? But here's what actually happened: - Improved Productivity: They were more focused during work hours. - Better Decision-Making: A rested mind led to better choices. - Enhanced Team Empowerment: Their team became more autonomous. - Personal Life Flourished: Stronger relationships and hobbies rediscovered. Setting boundaries didn't hinder their career. It enhanced it. Burnout is not a badge of honor. Lead by example. Encourage your team to find balance. How do you maintain work-life harmony? How setting water tight boundaries landed my client Annie a pay rise. (Don't underestimate the power of Boundaries) Annie came to me craving more balance. She was constantly in a state of exhaustion - Shutting her laptop at midnight most days, and reaching for her phone again on the nightstand at 6am the next day. Checking in on Weekends, or writing that report on a Sunday afternoon, as she just couldn’t find the time during the working week. Although understanding, Annie knew she owed her husband more than a rushed dinner and a distracted conversation at the end of the day. Annie had lived on ‘auto-pilot’ for so long, this felt *NORMAL* She was on a fast track to burnout, she just didn’t know it. Annie told me she was a different person at work, than at home. But, when I saw one of her values was authenticity, something didn't add up... No wonder she was experiencing a breakdown of her moral compass! 🪞 When we started working together, I compassionately held up a mirror. Not only was Annie aware her routines and habits needed to change. She wasn’t aware she was also living out of alignment with her values. Together, we mapped out Strategies that would not only get her back in alignment, bring more fillfillment AND restore her to full clarity around what’s important to prioritise in life. A biggy was Boundaries. These enabled Annie to show up as the person she desired to be: ✅ She said NO to extra work and pushed back on short deadlines ✅ Delegated work to her team, she’d previously done herself ✅ Prioritised herself, Made time to go on solo walks and to the gym on a week day ✅ Shut her laptop at 6pm most nights and reclaimed her evenings And it was refreshing. And, importantly, nothing bad happened 🤯 In fact, - Annie became a role model for her team to do the same - She found that she was WAY more productive and focussed - ALL her relationships improved 😉 - She found her voice and started backing herself So much so that Annie, who has never asked for a pay rise before… Went into an appraisal, with little expectations, except to be courageous. And blooming well ASKED for a pay rise!! And guess what? 💰She got one! Not only that, she also got told: - She was doing a Brilliant job - The company recognised a better work x life balance was required - The organisation needed to better support her moving forward. None of this would have been possible without having the courage to put boundaries in place to make such a life-changing shift. Figuring it out alone can take a long time, depending on how long you’ve been living on autopilot… Don’t underestimate the power of having someone on your personal board of directors who won’t let you play small. "I can handle one more project." "Let me just check Slack quickly..." "It's fine, I'll eat at my desk." Sound familiar? After coaching 100+ executives through burnout, I've noticed something fascinating: The rules that drain us aren't written in stone. We write them ourselves. 🤔 Here's the uncomfortable truth: Most "boundaries" aren't boundaries at all. They're just wishful thinking without teeth. Real boundaries need bite. Here's how to rewrite your rules: 1. Get Ruthlessly Specific 📝 • "I need better work-life balance" = Weak • "No meetings after 6 PM" = Strong • "I should stress less" = Weak • "I batch emails twice daily" = Strong 2. Make Violations Visible ⚡ • Document every boundary cross • Track energy drains • Screenshot late-night messages • Note who respects your limits 3. Create Consequence Systems 🎯 • Auto-responders after hours • Calendar blocks for deep work • Template responses for scope creep • Clear escalation paths Here's what most get wrong: Boundaries aren't about being difficult. They're about being clear. They're not walls to keep others out. They're guidelines to keep you in your power. Start here: Pick ONE boundary you'll enforce this week. Make it specific. Make it measurable. Make it non-negotiable. What's the ONE boundary you're committing to? Drop it below 👇 --- ♻️ Share this if you're done with burnout culture 🔔 Follow Sharon Grossman for more burnout-busting strategies

You built your career; don’t forget to build your life! Many leaders wear burnout like a badge of honor. But here’s the truth: if you’re winning at work and losing at life, you’re still losing. Work-life harmony (not balance) is the rhythm of high performance and deep fulfillment. Here’s how to tune in: 1️⃣ Redefine success. If your definition doesn’t include your health, family, joy, and peace of mind, rewrite it. 2️⃣ Schedule personal priorities first. Your calendar reveals your true values. Book the workout, the kid’s recital, the trip with your partner, then work around it. 3️⃣ Set emotional boundaries. Don’t just leave the office, learn to leave the mental baggage, too. Being physically present but mentally checked out isn’t leadership at home. 4️⃣ Lead by example. Your team is watching. If you never disconnect, they won’t feel safe to either. Permission starts at the top. 5️⃣ Take space to gain perspective. Some of your best business decisions will come when you’re not working; when you’re walking, traveling, journaling. The brain needs white space to think clearly. 6️⃣ Protect your energy like your time. You audit your calendar. Audit your energy. What drains you? What fuels you? Stop tolerating what’s stealing your life force. You don’t have to sacrifice everything to lead something great. You can build a life you don’t need to escape from! Work can be a chapter, not the whole story. #Leadership #ExecutiveCoaching #WorkLifeHarmony #LifeDesign #HighPerformance #MindfulLeadership #ceo #coo

It was 10:47 PM, I finally closed my laptop after my fourth Teams meeting of the day. My kiddo was already asleep. Dinner dishes still in the sink. Tomorrow's presentation half-finished because I spent 6 hours in back-to-back meetings that could've been emails. Sound familiar? Welcome to middle management—where you're simultaneously building your career and raising your family, stuck between the C-suite making decisions and your team needing direction. You're the translator. The buffer. The coach who's also the player. Expected to execute decisions you didn't make while managing people through changes you don't fully control. I used to think the solution was better time management. Wake up earlier. Stay up later. Squeeze productivity from every spare moment. Running on adrenaline and lattes until I burnt myself out. But after coaching dozens of middle managers through burnout, I discovered something different: The problem isn't your calendar. It's your boundaries. Here's 3 ways to start setting better boundaries. - 1️⃣ Block 90 minutes every morning for deep work. Before the meetings and 'urgent' emails hijack your day. Make it sacred. No exceptions unless the building's on fire. - 2️⃣ Batch your 1:1s into one afternoon. Stop letting them scatter across your week like productivity landmines. - 3️⃣ Create "office hours" for your team. Tuesday and Thursday, 2-4 PM. Questions, coaching, quick syncs all happen then. Not at 5:30 PM when you're running out the door to pick up your kid. And that guilt about not being available 24/7? Your team doesn't need you to be always on. They need you to be fully present when you are on. The executives above you got where they are by protecting their time. Your team below you needs you modeling what sustainable leadership looks like. Middle management is hard. But martyrdom isn't mandatory. Your family needs you present. Your team needs you focused. And you? You need to stop treating boundaries like a luxury you can't afford. 💫 What boundary could you set tomorrow that would change everything? ---- Hi! 👋 I'm Kelly, the founder of Career Slay. • Why do so many consultants struggle with burnout? Because somewhere along the way, they believed that saying “yes” to everything was the path to success. I’ve been there. In the early years of my business, I thought being helpful meant being available 24/7. Late-night emails, extra meetings, “quick” favors that turned into hours of unpaid work. I was trying to be the hero for everyone and quietly losing myself in the process. But here’s what I’ve learned after two decades in consulting: Healthy client relationships are built on boundaries. And when you don’t set them, three things happen: - You teach clients to over-rely on you. - You blur the line between service provider and employee. - You start resenting the work you once loved. I’ve coached countless consultants through this exact challenge. The turning point? They shift from over-functioning to leading. Here’s how they do it: 1. They set clear expectations up front. 2. They own their process. 3. They remember: boundaries = professionalism. The hardest part? Letting go of the belief that you’re only valuable if you’re “always on.” Real leadership means guiding the client, not rescuing them. If you’ve ever felt guilty for setting limits or worried that boundaries would cost you a deal, I made a video that walks through exactly how to shift that mindset. You can watch it here: https://lnkd.in/eXBPVKuV Remember: Your business should support your life, not consume it. Are you protecting your energy the way you protect your clients’ success? I’d love to read your comments.
