In the face of challenges, like the climate and ecological crisis, we can harness the skills and creativity of designers to find solutions.    The Design Council stands ready to help you unlock the power of design.    We welcome the new Government’s commitment to the creative industries and climate action. Here are four ways to act in partnership with the design economy to drive the green transition.    First, growth by design.    Design contributes 4.9% of UK GVA and is growing at twice the rate of the economy. To kickstart economic growth and unlock an extra £24billion towards UK GVA in the next 5 years, we call on you to:  ◾ Harness design as an asset in the new industrial strategy.  ◾ Back a 2025 Year of Design and World Design Congress to kickstart a decade of national renewal.  ◾ Create pro-innovation green regulation to shape a market for a regenerative design economy.  ◾ Invest in a network of regional Net Zero Design Innovation Clusters and embed design capabilities in the nationwide R&D.    Second, jobs by design.    You have committed to creating 650,000 green jobs. Design can fill skills shortages and power our industries of the future.  ◾ Upskill 1 million designers for the green transition by 2030 with a transformative intervention package.  ◾ Implement the recommendations of our Blueprint for Renewal to address the decline in D&T GCSE by prioritising design in the curriculum review and recruiting 2,000 new teachers. ◾ Partner with industry to deliver high-impact workplace upskilling. Third, homes by design. Your pledge to create 1.5 million homes must be sustainable and fulfil our legal climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. ◾ Give design leaders clear roles in addressing the challenge of creating 1.5million homes within our carbon budget. ◾ Prioritise reuse and retrofit of existing buildings as a housing solution, and place legal limits on embodied carbon in new buildings. ◾ Ensure use of Design Codes, Local Development Orders and strategic planning. ◾ Upgrade quality commitments by appointing a Design Champion on the New Towns Commission. And forth, net zero by design. To restore the UK’s global climate leadership, we need to redesign everything, as 80% of a product’s environmental impact is determined at the design stage. ◾ Create a role for design within the UK’s net zero and industrial strategies, prioritising design for decarbonisation and waste prevention within DESNZ and DEFRA. ◾ Tilt the regulatory playing field so green design isn’t undercut by climate laggards. ◾ Strengthen the civil service design profession and appoint Chief Design Officers to government departments to equip the nation for complex, mission-driven work. As we enter this new era, we hope your government will take action to maximise the design industry's contribution to national renewal.     How a Small Design Change Saved a Big Manufacturing Headache A while back, I was working on a plastic enclosure that constantly failed during assembly. The clips kept snapping — even though the design met all dimensional specs. After a failed trial, we realized the problem wasn’t in the size, but in the geometry of the snap-fit. We redesigned it with a longer cantilever arm and filleted base, reducing stress concentration.     Today the studio took center stage. A full day spent inside how cars are actually built taught the same lesson five different ways: the tools changed, the judgment didn't. Clay no longer decides the car — the headset does — but the headset still answers to a designer's eye. AI can build a Class-A surface in seconds; it still can't decide the surface is right. Pixels flatter proportion, so studios keep cutting physical models. The whole car is still drawn around one point beneath your hip — the H-point — and the light tunnel still sees what the render can't. The product-design block that closed alongside it made the same case from the other end of the market: Rimowa never designed a logo, its grooves became one; Teenage Engineering charges a fortune for taste, not specs. Decisions hold value, not features. In a single day we engaged the design teams of 21 marques — Ford, Audi, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Bugatti, Pininfarina and more — on exactly this question. Where it's heading: more VR, more AI, fewer clay hours. But the headset, the light tunnel and the H-point aren't going anywhere — they're how a studio knows the decision was right.     What feels good isn’t the same as what works. I’ve been in enough design reviews that pass the eye test in meetings. “This looks great. This is what I needed.”  It’s often a layup for a designer to produce clean visuals and those feel-good reactions. It looks like a win. Then it ships… and nothing changes. There’s a romantic idea that if something looks and feels great, it must be good design. I don’t fault designers for feeling this way going into design reviews. Stakeholders are often short on time and want a design to work with minimal effort.  And the emotional piece is an important part of the craft of design, especially in the world of AI. But emotional impact is just a reaction, especially from project teams and stakeholders. Design impact is a result. The emotional impact is about how people feel in the moment. The other is about what people actually do over time. They are often connected, where emotional impact gets attention. Design impact is what drives outcomes. And that difference matters because businesses don’t run on reactions. They run on behavior. After exchanging feedback with over 100 product and design leaders, there is a consistent throughline in my conversations: most teams still struggle to connect design work to business impact. Why? → No shared metrics between design and business → Hard to tie design work to revenue, retention, or outcomes → Difficulty isolating design’s impact from other teams → Unclear ownership of metrics across product, design, and marketing → Weak or fragmented data and analytics systems → No baseline or before/after comparison → Intangible outcomes like trust and perception are hard to measure → Long or delayed feedback loops → Decisions driven by opinion instead of evidence → Designers struggle to communicate impact in business terms So teams fall back to what they can defend: What looks good. What feels right. What gets approved. Emotional impact is used as the proof. However, if you want to shift that, your team needs to start by making behavior visible.     Most designers still think they’re getting hired for their prettiest screen. They’re not. Beautiful UI is just the entry ticket. What actually gets you hired is proof that your UI: • moved a metric • unblocked a workflow • or made money An easiest way to show that? 🔥 Add a tiny “Design Impact” box to every case study (or even a summary on your home page)... ...instead of ending with “the experience was more intuitive”…and try this (example) 👇 Design impact -------------- • Who I helped: New customers onboarding to a B2B billing platform • What changed: Activation rate went from 42% → 61% in 6 weeks • How we know: Tracked completion in Mixpanel cohorts before/after launch ____________________________ Another example: Design impact --------------- • Who I helped: Support team handling failed payments • What changed: Time-to-resolve dropped from 18 min → 7 min • How we know: Zendesk handle-time report, 30 days pre vs. post redesign ____________________________ Same UI. Same work. Completely different signal. You don't want them thinking “nice designer”.     One thing I was reminded of when I visited IDEA Design Mindset in Murcia last year: Good products are not created by making them look better at the end They are built by getting the difficult parts right early — usability, compliance, manufacturability, engineering logic and how the product will actually survive in the real world That is why companies like IDEA matter They are not just working on appearance They operate across medical devices, techno-solutions, packaging and other sectors where design has to do more than impress — it has to perform You can see that in projects ranging from CE-ready wearable neurotech and emergency medical devices developed around compliance and real-world use, through to rugged IoT solutions and packaging designed as part of operational performance.     🚽 Circular product by design. What if sustainability wasn’t about doing more… but designing better? These toilets have a sink on top of the tank. You wash your hands. 👏 You fill the tank 💧 You flush, with the water you used. One simple loop. No extra effort. No behavior change campaign. No expensive innovation. No tech. Just intelligent design. It reduces bathroom water use by around 20% — by rethinking a system we take for granted. And here’s the bigger lesson: We often look for complex climate solutions. But sometimes impact comes from questioning the default. Why are we flushing drinking-quality water in the first place? Where else are we using premium resources for low-value purposes? Climate action doesn’t always require breakthroughs. Sometimes it requires better questions. Where in your work or industry could one smart redesign create outsized impact?
