These small details, transform a simple act like opening a box into a delightful moment of discovery—it's packaging that invites you to engage with it, creating a connection between you and the product inside. From farm to table, the journey of the fruit is reflected in every detail of the packaging, creating a narrative that resonates with consumers.     Diatoms as designers? Diatoms are fascinating single-celled algae featuring intricate silica exoskeletons called frustules, made of amorphous silica & play key roles in photosynthesis, nutrient cycling, and oxygen production in aquatic ecosystems. Their intriguing structure has intrigued scientists & engineers for a long time, but it has remained difficult to quantify design principles for translation to real-world engineering. In a fruitful collaboration with Flavia Libonati and her lab, we show in paper in Advanced Functional Materials how these microscopic marvels can inspire breakthrough in multifunctional materials design. With applications ranging from lightweight filters to drug delivery and robotics, we show how nature-inspired engineering cannot only yield fundamental insights into biological materials but also provides real-world engineering solutions. We investigate mechanical properties like bending stiffness and buckling strength, alongside fluid dynamic efficiency and flow optimization, use additive manufacturing to create prototypes, and thereby reveal how diatoms’ hierarchical designs achieve remarkable multifunctionality. A unique feature of this work is the combination of in-situ experimental testing of 3D-printed diatom-inspired structures with advanced finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics. Key findings: 1️⃣ Strength through hierarchy: The honeycomb-like layers (areolae) dramatically boost the stiffness-to-density ratio, achieving lightweight designs with high structural integrity through sophisticated scaling. 2️⃣ Fluid optimization: Reinforced pore geometries improve flow distribution and reduce stress peaks, showcasing how nature balances efficiency and resilience. 3️⃣ Multifunctionality: The diatom-inspired model outperforms other geometries, offering insights for diverse applications like heat exchangers and robotic actuators.     This week it's four books about brand building. The common argument running through all of them, even though each approaches it from a completely different direction, is that the brands people remember are the ones that understood what they stood for and unapologetically owned it. 1. Building Winning Brands (Gurudev Prasad and Suharsh Dikshit) — Written by two practitioners who between them have worked with over fifty Indian brands, this book's most useful contribution is also its most unglamorous one: great brands win by subtracting, not adding. The authors argue that while the tools of marketing keep multiplying, the underlying logic hasn't changed. A brand is a promise, and the ones that earn lasting trust are the ones that reinforce the same core message repeatedly, with freshness but without drift. 2. Obsessed (Emily Hayward) — Hayward's book is about the conditions under which brand obsession forms, drawing on brands like Peloton and Glossier that built intensely loyal followings without the benefit of legacy or large launch budgets. Her argument is that obsession isn't a side effect of scale. It's something that has to be designed for from the beginning, and it requires a brand to take a clear, sometimes uncomfortable position on what it is and who it's genuinely for. 3. How Brands Become Icons (Douglas Holt) — Holt's thesis is one of the more genuinely counterintuitive ideas in brand strategy: iconic brands don't win by communicating their product benefits better than everyone else. They win by performing cultural myths that resolve a tension people feel in their lives but can't quite articulate. Harley-Davidson is actually selling a response to anxieties about masculinity and freedom that have been building in American culture for decades. The product is almost incidental to that work. 4. Eating the Big Fish (Adam Morgan) — Morgan's book is specifically for challenger brands, the ones without the resources or the market position of the category leader. His central idea is the lighthouse identity: a challenger brand has to know what it stands for so clearly and commit to it so completely that it becomes impossible to ignore, even at a fraction of the incumbent's budget. The worst thing a challenger can do is try to compete by covering the same ground as the leader, only cheaper and quieter. The thread across all four is this: whether you're building a new Indian consumer brand, trying to earn obsession on a modest budget, aiming for cultural iconhood, or taking on a category giant, the strategic answer is the same. Get clear on what you stand for, and then have the discipline to keep standing there.

    Most brands redesign to stay relevant. Coca-Cola evolved to stay recognizable. That is why a logo created in 1886 still feels timeless in 2026. Over the last 140 years, Coca-Cola has changed its packaging, typography, and visual identity several times. Yet, it has protected the assets that make the brand instantly recognizable: the Spencerian script, the iconic red, and the contour silhouette. In 1915, faced with a wave of imitators, Coca-Cola commissioned a bottle that consumers could recognize even in the dark or from broken pieces. More than a packaging decision, it was an exercise in building distinctive brand assets. As consumer behavior changed, Coca-Cola evolved with it. Six-pack carriers drove at-home consumption. Larger bottles catered to families. Cans introduced portability. PET bottles captured convenience. Aluminum bottles added a premium feel. The format changed. The identity did not. In 1950, Coca-Cola became the first commercial product to appear on the cover of Time magazine. When editors wanted company president Robert Woodruff on the cover, he refused and insisted that Coca-Cola itself be featured. Because great brands outlive the people behind them. Perhaps that is Coca-Cola's biggest marketing genius. It understood that brand equity is not built through constant reinvention.     What Makes a Brand Iconic? Most brands want to be “iconic.” Few know what that actually means. People think it’s about great advertising, big budgets, or going viral. It’s not. An iconic brand is one that lives rent-free in your mind without an invite. It’s the reason you say “Xerox this” instead of “photocopy this.” It’s why kids recognize Ronald McDonald before they recognize world leaders. It’s why people buy Nike shoes not for comfort, but for conviction. So, what makes a brand iconic? Here’s what I believe: 1️⃣ Iconic brands have a strong point of view. They don’t follow trends, they create them. They have an unmistakable tone, a distinct visual style, and most importantly, a unique way of looking at the world. Think of how Nike doesn’t sell shoes. It sells the inner battle you have with yourself. Or how Patagonia doesn’t sell jackets. It sells a movement to protect the planet. An iconic brand makes you feel something. And that feeling sticks. 2️⃣ Iconic brands are consistent, especially when it’s uncomfortable. When the whole world zigs, they zag. They resist the temptation to chase “what’s trending” and instead, stay true to their essence. Take Apple, for example. While every other tech brand crammed features into their devices, Apple stayed obsessed with simplicity. That consistency didn’t just set them apart, it made them untouchable. When you see that clean, minimal packaging, you know it’s Apple without even seeing the logo. 3️⃣ Iconic brands become part of culture. This is the hardest one to crack. It’s why we say “Google it” instead of “search for it.” It’s why the Coke bottle shape is recognized in every corner of the world. To become part of culture, you have to tap into universal truths — desires, fears, or aspirations that don’t change with time. Iconic brands stop being “brands” and start becoming symbols. Here’s the funny part. No one sets out to build an “iconic brand.” If you chase “iconic” from day one, you’ll probably end up generic. But if you chase meaning, relevance, and impact, you just might become iconic by accident. So, the real question isn’t “How do we make our brand iconic?” The real question is “What will we stand for, even when it’s uncomfortable?” That’s where the magic happens.     Most people don’t think about the environmental cost of color. They should. The textile dyeing industry is responsible for approximately 20% of global industrial water pollution. Synthetic dyes, the ones that produce those bright, consistent, season specific tones, depend on heavy chemicals, enormous water volumes, and generate toxic effluent that often ends up in rivers near production clusters. The shift happening now is quiet but significant. Earthy, muted, natural palettes aren’t just an aesthetic trend. They’re a material one. Natural and low impact dyeing processes, plant based, mineral, or eco print methods, work best with restrained tonal ranges. Clay, sand, ochre, moss, bark, stone. These tones don’t require chemical intensity to achieve. They also don’t date as quickly, which means slower consumption cycles and longer garment lives. Design restraint and ecological restraint are often the same choice. At Weaving Vibes, eco-printing and natural dyeing aren’t offered as premium additions. They’re built into how we think about fabric from the start, because color carries environmental weight, and that weight deserves to be considered intentionally.     🌊 Life Begins as a Wave Pattern 🥚 MIT researchers have discovered that when an egg is fertilized, the surface of the cell erupts into spiraling waves of activity that closely resemble patterns seen across nature, from ocean currents and atmospheric circulation to brain activity and even quantum fluids. Using starfish eggs (large, transparent, and representative of many species), the team observed how billions of proteins surge to the egg’s surface after fertilization. These proteins don’t move randomly. Instead, they organize into rotating spiral waves that emerge, collide, annihilate, and disappear — much like hurricanes forming and dissipating across a planet. 🧬 Why this matters These waves are driven by an activated protein called Rho-GTP, and they play a critical role in helping the egg: - Find its center - Decide where to divide - Coordinate the earliest steps of development Without these wave patterns, cell division — and life itself — wouldn’t proceed correctly. 🔁 A universal pattern When researchers analyzed the motion of these spirals, they found something remarkable: the statistics matched wave behaviors in entirely different systems — including: - Vortices in fluids - Electrical waves in the brain and heart - Patterns in quantum materials Different scales. Same mathematics. “This is a very universal wave pattern,” says MIT physicist Nikita Fakhri. “It opens a completely new perspective,” adds mathematician Jörn Dunkel, suggesting tools from physics and fluid dynamics can now be applied directly to biology. 🧠 A glimpse of the future Because these biological waves carry information, the team even suggests they could inspire new forms of biological computation, borrowing ideas from quantum physics and applying them at the cellular level.
