    In the early 20th century, sunlight was a primary, scientifically-backed treatment in hospitals and sanatoriums, known as helio therapy, used to treat diseases like tuberculosis, rickets, and lupus. Before antibiotics, doctors used rooftop solarium, specialized sunrooms, and outdoor, exposed balconies to harness ultraviolet (UV) light for healing and killing bacteria. While not a cure-all, the principles of natural light are returning through better hospital design, as studies indicate it improves patient mood, lowers stress, and can improve recovery outcomes.     Most people think melatonin helps you sleep. But that's not actually its main job. After 30 years in medicine, I've learned something far more important. Melatonin is one of the master repair signals of human biology. Sleep is just a side effect. Here's what actually happens. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗔𝗟 ↳ When darkness falls, specialised cells in the retina detect the loss of light  ↳ That signal travels to the brain's circadian control centre: the suprachiasmatic nucleus  ↳ It then activates the pineal gland  ↳ And the pineal gland releases melatonin Darkness → melatonin. But melatonin doesn't simply help you fall asleep. It starts the night shift inside your body. 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗠𝗘𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗡 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 Melatonin tells your cells: "Night has arrived. Begin repair." 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁. ↳ Activates antioxidant defence systems  ↳ Reduces inflammatory signalling  ↳ Protects mitochondrial function  ↳ Strengthens immune surveillance  ↳ Regulates glucose metabolism For most of human history, this repair signal happened every night. Because nights were dark. 𝗠𝗢𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗡 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 Artificial light now extends the day far beyond sunset. ↳ Phones  ↳ Screens  ↳ LED lighting  ↳ Streetlights The brain reads all of them the same way: "It's still daytime."     Just one hour of sleep debt can take four days to recover. Not an all-nighter. Not a jet lag recovery. Just… one late night. And for most of us, that’s every Monday. We push through. Caffeine up. Call it discipline. But here’s the truth: your brain is still catching up from that “just one more email” energy four days later. So when Bryan Johnson the founder of Blueprint and one of the most measured humans alive decided to optimise his life, he started with this: SLEEP. Not supplements. Not cold plunges. Not AI routines. Just the thing most of us have… but misuse daily. What he does (and what’s working): ✅ Same sleep + wake time. Every day. No weekend exceptions. Circadian rhythm locked in. ✅ Red light only after sunset. Or blue blockers if you’re in a pinch. (Your phone’s night mode ≠ enough.) ✅ Digital wind-down, 1 hour before bed. No screens. Just calm. (Conversations count.) ✅ No food after lunch. Extreme? A little. But deeper sleep starts in your gut. ✅ Cool room. Zero light. Data tracking. His bedroom’s a sleep lab.     Why "Night Shift" mode isn't saving your sleep You put your phone on "Night Shift" (the yellow tint) and think you are safe to scroll in bed until 11:30 PM. You aren't. You are still blasting your brain with "daylight" signals, and it is destroying your recovery. Light is a drug. Treat it like one. Your eyes contain specific sensors. Their only job is to detect light intensity and set your internal clock. When these cells detect bright light (even with a yellow tint) at night, they send a signal to your brain's master clock to suppress Melatonin. If you are looking at a backlit screen 6 inches from your face, your brain thinks it is 12:00 PM (noon). It keeps your cortisol high and your body temperature elevated. You might fall asleep from exhaustion, but your sleep quality (REM and Deep Sleep) will be shallow because your hormones are out of sync. Turn your phone into a submarine. "Night Shift" is not enough because the screen is still too bright. You need to switch your phone to Red Color Tint. Red light has the least impact on melatonin suppression. Try this iOS Hack... Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters. Turn "Color Filters" ON and select Color Tint. Slide Intensity and Hue all the way to the right (Deep Red). Pro Tip: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut and select "Color Filters." Now, triple-click your power button. Your screen turns deep red. Do this automatically at 9:00 PM every night. You can check a text if necessary without blasting your brain with "daylight" energy. Are you "winding down" or are you "wiring up"? We claim we scroll to relax. But social media is designed to trigger dopamine and alertness. It is "digital caffeine." If you wouldn't drink an espresso at 10:30 PM, why are you consuming visual stimulants? Protect your eyes to protect your mind. Q. Try the "Triple Click" hack right now. Did it work? (Yes/No).

    The origins of “in the limelight,” which refers to being the focus of public attention, are linked to a type of stage lighting that was popular in the 19th century. The “lime” in limelight has nothing to do with the green citrus fruit but rather with a chemical compound, calcium oxide, also known as quicklime. In the early 1820s, English inventor Goldsworthy Gurney, improving on the work of earlier scientists, developed a blowpipe that burned hydrogen and oxygen to create an extremely hot flame. When Gurney heated calcium oxide in the flame it produced an intense white light, dubbed limelight. A Scottish military engineer, Thomas Drummond, learned about Gurney’s work and around the mid-1820s devised the first practical use for limelight, as a surveyor’s tool. When landmarks and reference points were lit with Drummond’s bright light they could be observed from great distances by surveyors, enabling for more accurate measurement-making. In 1837, limelight was used for the first time to illuminate a stage, at London’s Covent Garden. During the second half of the 19th century, theaters regularly utilized this powerful form of light, which could be focused into a beam to spotlight specific actors or an area of the stage, as well as create special effects such as sunlight or moonlight. However, a downside to limelight was that each light needed someone to monitor it and make adjustments to the block of lime as it burned. Additionally, this type of lighting proved to be a fire hazard. In 1879, Thomas Edison demonstrated the first practical electric light bulb and by the end of the 19th century most theaters had switched from limelight to electricity, which was safer and more economical.     Before electric street lighting became the norm, city streets were lit with natural gas. While some gaslights simply burned 24 hours per day, others were ignited manually each evening by a man called a lamplighter. The gas streetlight was invented in 1792. Gaslights were first installed in London in 1807 and in the USA before 1820 (accounts differ as to whether Rhode Island or Baltimore had the first gaslights). My grandfather (1880-1987) used to tell me about the lamplighters who would come around in Brooklyn, NY in the early 20th century. Through the 1920s, the gas companies competed fiercely with electric lights, coming up with ever-more bright and efficient gas mantles. By 1930 they had introduced automatic igniters. But by 1930, electric streetlights had pretty much won the war with gas for new installations, although some gaslights lingered on into the 1950s. In some cities with historic districts, modern gaslights supplement electric lights for decorative purposes.

    “If the rate of change on the outside exceeds the rate of change on the inside, the end is near.” — Jack Welch From 1800 to 1900, everyday homes underwent a remarkable transformation due to a series of technological advancements. Today, we take them for granted from flushing toilets and built-in baths and showers to consistent postal services and lighting fixtures. In the mid-1800s, homes primarily used candles and oil lamps for light. The interior often featured elaborate chandeliers hanging from ceilings and sconces attached to walls, though these were typically reserved for special occasions. Gas lighting of buildings and streets began early in the 19th century, with most streets in London lit by gas as early as 1816. But for half a century people distrusted gas and few homes used it. Gas lighting was only accepted once gas fittings were introduced in the new Houses of Parliament in 1859. Fashionable townhouses were fitted with gas lights in each of the main rooms. By the close of the century, gas lighting was widespread in city homes, and electricity began to diffuse into many households. As 1900 approached, electric lighting was still at an early stage of development. In urban areas and larger towns, gas lighting was widespread, often complemented by candles and oil lamps. However, in smaller towns, villages, and rural areas, the primary sources of light continued to be candles and oil lamps almost exclusively. This historical context parallels the gradual but significant shift in business practices, underscoring the importance of embracing innovation and updating operational 'wiring' to stay relevant in the modern world. Technological Debt Imagine your organisation as a stately mansion. You have inherited this beautiful building. It dates back to the 1800's when electricity was not yet widespread. The mansion was built for its time, it was modern and fit for purpose inside and out. Buying more candles, and installing candelabras and sconces is easy. That's simply an extension of the current technology. However, this new technology gas means a slight rethinking of things, but I can ride both horses, and I can have a mix of gas, candles and oil (as long as I keep them separated). I'm comfortable with my lighting technology, and my house looks wonderful. Electricity presents a total revamp. This is not merely about a fresh coat, some new fixtures and an extension of the current paradigm. This new technology requires a rewiring of the entire home. This is messy, it is expensive and it means a "letting go" of familiarity and comfort. The reluctance or delay in adopting new technologies is a form of "cultural" or "technological debt." This is because sticking with outdated technologies or methods, while initially more comfortable or cost-effective, will inevitably lead to increased costs, inefficiencies, or disadvantages in the long run as the world moves forward technologically. #innovation #thursdaythoughts #transformation

    Radiologists are optimizing image contrast at the expense of their own biology. We often hear that “radiologists work in the dark,” but a recent paper poses a more pressing question: What does that actually do to them? The reality is concerning. Radiologists spend most of their day in dim environments to enhance image interpretation, but this practice comes with significant costs: - Increased risk of burnout - Higher rates of depression - Disrupted circadian rhythms - Chronic fatigue and reduced performance Why does this happen? Daylight is essential for biology. It regulates serotonin, which affects mood and focus, controls melatonin for sleep cycles, and drives vitamin D for systemic health. Removing access to daylight doesn’t just alter the environment; it changes the physiology of the worker. Paradoxically, radiology departments are often exempt from daylight regulations due to diagnostic needs. This means we prioritize image quality while neglecting human performance. The deeper issue extends beyond well-being. Burnout leads to diagnostic fatigue, which can result in errors that impact patient care. The solution isn’t simply “more light.” It requires smarter design, including: - Low-light zones for reading - Daylight zones for breaks - Adaptive, ergonomic lighting In conclusion, while we have optimized the machine, it’s time to optimize the human interpreting it. The best image in the world is ineffective if the radiologist is exhausted.

    A British woman has won a landmark court case that is drawing global attention to the unintended consequences of LED street lighting. By presenting scientific and environmental evidence, she successfully demonstrated that certain LED street lamps were negatively affecting human health while also causing harm to local wildlife.
