The most useful design lesson I got this week came from a 100-year-old building. 👇 This weekend, I visited the Bauhaus Museum in Dessau, and surprisingly, I came away with insights that felt deeply relevant to my work in instructional design. Bauhaus (1919–1933) was more than just a design school. It was a revolution in thinking. They were among the first to unite art, technology, and practicality — shaping a design philosophy that still speaks to us today. Here’s how I’m rethinking some of their core ideas through the lens of modern learning design: 1️⃣ Form follows function — Design isn’t about decoration. It’s about making the purpose visible and usable. In learning, that means cutting the fluff and putting outcomes first. 2️⃣ Honesty of materials — A course should be a course. Let’s not dress it up as a game or a show unless that’s part of the goal. Learners value clarity. 3️⃣ Unity of disciplines — Bauhaus embraced the synergy of different crafts. In ID, it’s the collaboration between designers, SMEs, and AI that brings learning to life. 4️⃣ Simplicity through intention — Less isn’t just more — it’s stronger. Well-structured simplicity improves both focus and retention. 5️⃣ Design as process — Iteration was central to Bauhaus thinking. It’s also at the heart of effective learning design: test, adjust, evolve. 💬 Bauhaus didn’t give us answers. When you align learning strategy with how the brain actually learns you'll find that performance improves. In many organisations, learning still means content delivery - I battle this challenge regularly. L&D teams measure outputs like number of courses, completions, attendance rather than outcomes. But humans don’t learn by consuming information. They learn by connecting ideas, making meaning, and putting their knowledge and skills into practice over and over again until their brains physically change. If you want to genuinely change behaviour and performance in your organisation then your whole strategy needs to be designed with the brain in mind. Here are three practical principles to share with your design and delivery teams: 🧠 Space, don’t cram Learning needs time to settle. Encourage teams to design experiences that build over time rather than delivering everything in one go. The return on retention is remarkable. 💡 Engage peoples emotions People remember what feels relevant and real. Challenge your designers to stimulate learners emotions with hooks like stories, challenges and personal connections. Don't just design pretty slides. 🔄 Practice and retrieval Learning journeys, rather than one off events, give people time to apply, reflect, and test new skills where it matters - on the job. This doesn't mean repetition for its own sake; it's simply how neural pathways are strengthened. When your learning strategy aligns with how the brain naturally works key metrics like engagement, performance and business impact improve. Why do some training programs create real transformation, while others fade before the next team meeting? The answer lies in neuroscience: the brain’s architecture defines how we learn, remember, and apply. When organisations ignore that, even the best-designed programs fail to leave a trace. Our brains don’t thrive under marathon sessions or dense slide decks. They need rhythm, variety, and rest. The science is clear: • Shorter, spaced sessions improve consolidation and memory. • Multimodal design (visuals, discussion, application) keeps engagement high. • Deliberate downtime activates the brain’s default mode network — where meaning forms. It’s not about more information. It’s about designing conditions for real change. Behaviour Change, Not Just Courses Too often, the answer to every performance problem is “build another course.” But knowledge alone doesn’t drive change, behaviour does. Effective learning experiences include: • Experience-based triggers that prompt action. • Social reinforcement to sustain new habits. • Retrieval practice to strengthen recall and confidence. When you shift from course completion to behaviour activation, learning stops being an event; it becomes a habit. Navigating AI and Automation AI brings both opportunity and risk. If we outsource too much thinking, we weaken the neural pathways that make us adaptable and creative. Some guiding principles I shared on the show: • Use AI to augment critical thinking, not replace it. • Design friction points that encourage reflection. • Give early-career learners space to build expertise before automation takes over. AI can enhance learning, but only when we keep the human brain at the center. Whole-Brain Design in Action At Synaptic Potential, we’ve seen organisations transform by embedding neuroscience into learning strategy. One global firm reshaped C-suite culture by introducing neuroscience-based reflection tools that transformed how leaders approached feedback. Another redesigned performance reviews to make them more constructive and less stressful, boosting engagement and trust. These results didn’t come from adding more content, but from aligning with how people actually learn. A Field Guide for Learning That Lasts If you’re in L&D or leadership, your challenge isn’t just to deliver information, it’s to create change that endures. That starts with respecting how the brain learns, consolidates, and grows. Because when we design with the brain in mind, learning doesn’t just stick, it scales.

How to Shift from Task-Driven to Purpose-Driven: Rethink Your Role! As a Learning Experience Designer, it’s easy to focus on the immediate deliverables—designing modules, creating content, or analyzing engagement stats. But meaningful design goes beyond tasks. Our real work lies in shaping experiences that truly impact learners and, ultimately, the organization. So how do we go beyond “doing the job” to making a difference? Here’s a story that might inspire you and a framework to make purpose-driven design part of your approach. In my first few months of career, I found myself deeply immersed in the mechanics—working on slide decks, writing quizzes, and setting up courses. It was rewarding, but something was missing. I realized that, beyond the design, I wanted to create experiences that learners would remember and apply. I started thinking about each task in a new way, asking myself: 🚷 Who am I designing this for? – Visualize the learners’ specific needs and challenges. 📵 What change am I hoping to create? – Focus on practical outcomes, like helping a new hire feel confident or empowering managers with better feedback skills. ☢ How can I make it stick? – Seek creative ways to make the learning experience engaging and memorable. When was the last time you asked yourself "What can I add to this learning experience?" You're asking yourself the wrong question. I learned this the hard way when designing a leadership program for first-time managers. My first iteration on paper was packed with content: video lectures, case studies, role-play scenarios, reflection exercises, peer discussions, and multiple assessments. I was proud of how comprehensive it was. Then I realised the harsh truth: these managers do not have so much time. If I were to get this program live, no one would finish it. I needed to simplify it - A LOT. The best learning designs aren't built up. They're stripped down. 🧩 The Jenga Strategy Now I design everything by "designing to the breaking point" - removing elements one by one like Jenga blocks until the tower wobbles, then adding back just enough to prevent collapse. That wobble zone is where the real learning happens. I took a radical approach: no instructors, no videos, no perfect examples. I removed element after element until we had just 4 things: - Real-world case studies - Peer feedback loops - Weekly mentor check-ins - Actionable tools to apply in their context The result? We had a ~90% completion rate! ✅ WHAT WORKS: Removing instructions until learners must think critically Cutting content to create productive struggle Eliminating scaffolding to promote problem-solving ❌ WHAT DOESN'T: Endless resources "just in case" someone needs them Over-explaining that robs learners of discovery Perfect examples that discourage experimentation Your best learning designs aren't the ones with the most elements. They're the ones where every single element earns its place by driving real results. The next time you're designing a learning experience, don't ask "What else can I add?" Ask "What else can I take away before it breaks?"

These skills are associated with increased activity in the brain's prefrontal cortex, which is involved in decision-making and social behavior. Overall, culturally responsive teaching can lead to a more inclusive and effective learning environment by engaging students' brains in ways that honor their cultural identities and experiences.

There’s something missing from your presentation. And because of it, you are sending an unintended message to your audience. More Than Authenticity. Authenticity isn’t a proprietary Gen Z-must have. It’s how we relate to one another. For most of us, our bias runs deep. We don’t see what we don’t see. And we leave out groups of people when we present. DEI casts a net wide enough to cover everyone in the room, —irrespective of their age, gender, or cultural background. This isn’t a design tip but a call to be responsibly inclusive. The Slippery Slope of Ignorance: 🔸Neglecting DEI is more than just bad vibes. 🔸It promotes exclusion, harms reputation, and negatively impacts revenue. The How-To, DEI in Design: ① Accessible Fonts and Contrasting Colors: The first step in universal design. ② Visual Imagery: Are they a representation of diverse leadership? ③ Inclusive Language: In a 'he | she' world, ‘they’ get lost. Reclaim them. ④ Beyond the Deck: What examples, case studies & quotes get showcased? ⑤ Age Sensitivity: Young or old—each has its merit. Do your slides say that?
