    Dear IT Auditors, Database Audit and Encryption Review Data is only as safe as the encryption that protects it. When encryption controls fail or are poorly implemented, even strong firewalls and access controls cannot stop data exposure. That’s why auditing database encryption processes is a key part of every IT and cybersecurity audit. 📌 Start with the Encryption Policy Begin by reviewing the organization’s data encryption policy. It should define which data must be encrypted, the standards to follow, and the roles responsible for managing encryption keys. Policies that lack detail often lead to inconsistent implementation. 📌 Encryption at Rest Verify that sensitive data stored in databases is encrypted at rest. Review configurations in tools such as Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) for SQL, Oracle, or cloud-managed databases. Ensure encryption algorithms like AES-256 are used rather than weaker ones. 📌 Encryption in Transit Data moving between applications and databases should be encrypted using secure protocols such as TLS 1.2 or higher. Auditors should test whether unencrypted connections (HTTP, FTP, or old JDBC strings) are still in use. Any plaintext transmission is a data leak waiting to happen. 📌 Key Management Controls Strong encryption is meaningless if the keys are weak or mishandled. Review how encryption keys are generated, stored, rotated, and retired. Confirm that keys are held in a secure vault or Hardware Security Module (HSM). Keys should never be hard-coded into scripts or shared via email. 📌 Access to Keys and Certificates Only a limited number of trusted individuals should access encryption keys. Review access lists for key vaults and certificate repositories. Each access should be logged and periodically reviewed. 📌 Backup Encryption Backups often contain full copies of production data. Verify that backup files and storage devices are also encrypted. If backups are sent to third parties or cloud storage, ensure that the same encryption controls are applied. 📌 Decryption and Recovery Testing Encryption isn’t complete without successful decryption. Review whether periodic recovery tests are performed to confirm that encrypted backups and databases can be restored correctly. Unrecoverable encryption is as dangerous as no encryption. 📌 Audit Evidence Key evidence includes encryption configuration files, key management procedures, access control lists for key stores, and decryption test reports. These show that encryption controls are both effective and maintained. Effective database encryption builds resilience. It ensures that even if an attacker gains access, the data remains unreadable and useless.     Every login is a door into your business. If the wrong person gets through one of those doors, payroll, customers, and your reputation are all on the line. Some doors lead to one small app. Other doors, like single sign-on (SSO), open into many rooms. And behind those doors: payroll, customer data, email, files, SaaS apps… the things your business runs on. If an attacker gets through one of those doors, they don’t need to “hack the network.” They just walk in, as you. Here’s the mental picture that helps: ➢ Every account = a door. ➢ Admin accounts = master keys. ➢ Your identity provider (Entra ID, Okta, etc.) = the main front door. Done right, SSO is one of the best ways to reduce risk: ➢ Fewer doors to protect instead of dozens of random logins. ➢ One front door with strong MFA and conditional access on every sign-in. ➢ Clean identity logs that a 24x7 managed ITDR service can watch for strange behavior. Shared logins are harder, but you still have options. A lot of MSPs, for example, need admin access into many client systems. Naming one account per engineer can create way too many master keys. That’s where privileged access management helps: you limit how many master keys exist, wrap control around them, and keep an audit trail for who used what, when. If you want a simple place to start, ask three questions this week: ➤ Which apps are behind SSO, and which still have separate passwords? ➤ How are MFA and conditional access set up on our main identity provider? ➤ Who is watching identity activity 24x7, and how fast would they spot a bad login?     Stop handing out house keys when you should be issuing hotel keys. 🗝️💳 The physical world solved access control decades ago. In cybersecurity, we still ignore the lesson. 🏠 The house key (standing privilege) • You keep it forever • It works 24/7/365 • If it is lost or stolen, the finder has unlimited access This is how many organizations still treat admin accounts. 🏨 The hotel key (just in time access) • It works for a specific duration, for example four hours • It opens only the doors you are authorized to access • At expiration, it simply stops working The practitioner take: The future of IAM is not just vaulting passwords. It is eliminating standing privilege. But moving from house keys to hotel keys can feel overwhelming. Here is how to start just in time access without boiling the ocean. 1. Identify the penthouse Do not start with everyone. Start with your highest value targets. Cloud admins in AWS, Azure, or GCP. Domain admins. These are the keys attackers want most. 2. Evict the residents This is the hardest step. You remove permanent access. Expect pushback. Remind people they are not losing the ability to drive the car. They are just grabbing the keys when they actually need them. 3. Install the front desk Do not replace standing access with a three day approval ticket. Good: A request in ServiceNow Better: A Slack or Teams command like /request-admin Best: Automated approval for pre approved, low risk actions 4. Set the timer Start with a generous window, such as eight hours, to reduce friction. Over time, tighten it to four hours or even task based access as the culture adapts. If an attacker steals a house key, they own you indefinitely. If they steal a hotel key, they are racing the clock. Do not just manage credentials. Manage time.
