    ◆ THE UNIX WAY ◆ Episode 02: The Compatibility Question You need a Linux binary on your server. Proprietary software. A vendor tool built for RHEL. That backup agent your client insists on. Spotify. Discord. How does it feel? ■ FreeBSD ––– sh sysrc linux_enable="YES" service linux start pkg install linux-rl9-base ––– Done. Linux binaries run. Natively. No emulator. No container. No VM overhead. The kernel translates Linux syscalls to FreeBSD syscalls. In real time. Near-zero overhead. Since 1995. ––– sh $ file /compat/linux/usr/bin/bash ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, for GNU/Linux $ /compat/linux/usr/bin/bash --version GNU bash, version 5.2.15 (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu) ––– A real Linux binary. Running on FreeBSD. Without virtualisation. Steam runs. Zoom runs. That proprietary backup agent from the client runs. The door is open. ■ Linux You want a FreeBSD binary on Linux? Option A: VM. Install FreeBSD in QEMU/KVM. 2GB RAM overhead. Boot time. Network configuration. Maintenance. Option B: Container. FreeBSD userland in Docker exists, but it's cross-compilation or emulation. Not native execution. The kernel doesn't speak FreeBSD syscalls. Option C: Port the software. Recompile. Fix the libc differences. Chase the kqueue/epoll divergence. Good luck. There is no "FreeBSD Compatibility Layer" for Linux. The direction doesn't exist. ■ THE POINT FreeBSD can run Linux. Linux chose a different path: performance-hungry virtualisation and containers. Both work. Different philosophies. FreeBSD was designed with compatibility in mind. The kernel abstracts syscalls cleanly enough to support a second ABI. The userland and kernel are developed together. Integration is the default. Linux is a kernel with a thousand distributions around it. FreeBSD is an operating system with a clear design philosophy and solid guidelines. The difference shows here. You can work on FreeBSD and still use every Linux tool you need. Best of both worlds.     Most inaccessible documents aren’t created out of bad intent. No-one does it on purpose. They’re created out of habit. The good news is you don’t need to be an accessibility expert to help build a culture where accessible documents become the norm. Small behaviours, repeated often, shape organisational culture far more than policies do. Here are five simple things anyone can do, right now. (You can also find some further resources in the comments.) 1 - Build accessibility into your workflow Treat accessibility checks the same way you treat spellcheck. Before sending a document, take a minute to run an accessibility check and scan for obvious issues. When accessibility becomes a normal step in the workflow, it stops being an afterthought and starts becoming routine. 2 - Be an ally. You don’t have to personally need accessibility to advocate for it. Ask whether documents have been checked. Encourage colleagues to think about accessibility. If something isn’t accessible, raise it constructively, push back gently if someone sends you something that isn’t accessible. Cultural change often begins with someone asking the question. 3 - Learn the tools you already have Most people already have everything they need. Simple features such as document headings (heading 1, 2 etc), meaningful link titles, and built in accessibility checkers make a huge difference. Learning how to use these properly can transform the usability of a document in minutes. 4 - Think beyond screen readers. Whilst a crucial part of it, accessibility isn’t just about screen reader compatibility. Clear structure, readable layouts, logical headings, and descriptive links make documents easier for everyone to navigate and understand. Accessibility improves usability for the entire organisation. 5 - Automate your mailbox One simple trick is creating an Outlook rule that replies to anyone who sends you an attachment asking whether the document has been checked for accessibility. It’s a gentle prompt that helps build awareness and encourages better habits over time. Bonus tip - set the standard. If you want others to care about accessible documents, your own documents need to set the standard. When people consistently receive accessible content from you, it reinforces that accessibility is not an optional extra. It is simply how good work gets done.     Personalised learning experiences. Better support for students with additional needs. Reduced teacher workloads. AI has huge potential to help close the learning gaps between Australian students, but only if we build equity in from the beginning. Because, without deliberate design, the same technology could just as easily widen the divide, especially for students already experiencing disadvantage. It’s great to see this issue highlighted in this Guardian story about the gaps already emerging between schools with more resources than others. https://lnkd.in/gztDgK3f? To get this right for all our young people, we must: ▪️Ensure students experiencing disadvantage have reliable devices and internet access. ▪️Provide digital literacy programs for students, parents and educators, including safe and ethical use of AI and critical thinking. ▪️Set up community-based AI literacy hubs to help people build confidence. ▪️Promote accessible AI tools and training so students with disability are not left behind. ▪️Strengthen collaboration between schools, technology leaders and government. ▪️Put in place system-level protections and standards that ensure equitable access and opportunities. With the right safeguards and support, AI can become another tool that helps more young people make the most of their education.     “Meeting students where they are” has become a familiar refrain in higher education. But - what does it mean? For many, the phrase is interpreted metaphorically: understand students’ starting points, empathise with their challenges, personalise their learning. But we must also take it literally. Students are not where we imagined they would be post-Covid. They are not back in the lecture theatre. Instead, they’re working extra shifts, caring for siblings or ageing parents, training for national competitions, or managing chronic illness. They’re commuting long distances, or not commuting at all. And even when they are online, they’re multitasking, catching up, and learning in short bursts between other responsibilities. Universities are beginning to respond. In Australia, Regional University Study Hubs are locally embedded, tech-enabled spaces that bring higher education into the everyday geographies of students’ lives. The model is expanding, being trialled in suburban communities where participation in traditional campus life is constrained by distance, cost, and complexity. Scheduling is also being reimagined. Institutions such as Victoria University have adopted block teaching models, allowing students to focus on one subject at a time. This deepens engagement and better fits the lives of students juggling work or family. Others are trialling evening intensives, rolling start dates, or asynchronous-first models. Some are experimenting with mobile classrooms or co-locating learning in community hubs like libraries or health clinics. While institutional change moves slowly, instructors can adapt more quickly. Some have moved the bulk of content delivery online, not as lecture recordings, but as purpose-designed modules. This frees up classroom time for what can’t be done well online: guest panels with industry experts, facilitated workshops, debates, and simulations. Others design assessments that invite students to apply theory to their lives, by analysing work or other experiences. Instructors have sliding participation windows, offer multiple modes of contribution, or use voice notes or video clips to respond to student queries, replacing anonymity with presence. Instructors are exploring AI tools to personalise the learning journey, helping students get unstuck with concept explanations tailored to their level of understanding, or providing feedback on formative work. Such tools allow us to also meet students where they are in their current grasp of a concept, their confidence, and their pace. To truly meet students where they are, we need more than convenience. We need redesign that raises our aspirations for the kinds of relationships, rhythms, and structures that contemporary learners need. Meeting students where they are means recognising that their lives are rich, complex, and constrained and that higher education must fit into that world, not ask students to leave it behind. #HigherEducation #Universities

    In today's rapidly evolving educational landscape, many EdTech and education leaders are heralding AI—Artificial Intelligence - as the game changer that will transform education forever. They promise unprecedented access to personalised learning, adaptive teaching methods, and scalable educational solutions. But amidst this fervour for AI, I worry that we are losing sight of the real AI—Actual Intelligence. In our race towards technological dominance, we must not forget that a significant majority of children across Asia and Africa lack access to even the most basic technology—a mobile phone and stable internet. This digital divide poses a severe threat to educational equity. Imagine the implications: As we pour resources into AI-driven solutions, millions of students remain disconnected from these advancements, widening the gap between the haves and the have-nots. We must ask ourselves: - Are we inadvertently creating a more divided educational system? - Is our pursuit of AI in education inadvertently marginalising those who need access to quality education the most? It's time for education and EdTech leaders to refocus on Actual Intelligence—developing innovative solutions that ensure every child, regardless of their geographical or economic background, has access to quality education. Let's harness AI not just for its potential to innovate but also for its potential to bridge gaps. I invite you to join the conversation.     Many people believe live trainings work better simply because people can talk to each other face‑to‑face, but that’s not the real reason. In reality, their effectiveness comes from something else entirely, they naturally follow a powerful learning rhythm. Great offline trainings follow one simple logic: action → reflection → understanding → application. This is Kolb’s Cycle. And it’s incredibly powerful. The problem? It was almost impossible to implement it in online learning. That’s why 90% of online courses look like “interactive lectures”: nice slides, videos, quizzes. But that’s content consumption, not transformation. And now - the unexpected twist. For the first time, online learning has caught up with offline experiences. Because AI removed the main barrier: it finally allows learners to get experience, reflection, and practice in a personalized way. Here’s how Kolb’s Cycle looks in modern learning design: 1️⃣ Concrete Experience — action Essence: the learner must do something, live through a situation, face a task — ideally experiencing difficulty or making a mistake that shows their current model doesn’t work. How online: role-based dialogue, scenario simulation. 2️⃣ Reflective Observation — reflection Essence: pause and think — what happened, what actions were taken, and why the result turned out this way. How online: interactive reflection prompts; AI coach provides feedback based on performance and the learner’s own reflections. 3️⃣ Abstract Conceptualisation — understanding Essence: form a new behavioural model — concepts, principles, algorithms that explain how to act more effectively. How online: short video lecture, model breakdown, interactive frameworks, checklists, interactive infographics. 4️⃣ Active Experimentation — application Essence: try the new model in a safe environment and observe the result. How online: AI-based simulation, situational exercise, case-solving with the new approach; AI coach supports and adjusts. The outcome? Online learning stops being “content” and becomes a behaviour tracker. A course becomes a training simulator, not a film. Kolb’s Cycle finally becomes real in digital learning.     Research-backed accessible text checklist (beyond color & fonts) 1️⃣ Avoid ALL CAPS for long text Reading all caps slows people down by up to 10–20% because we recognize word shapes, not just letters. Uppercase removes those shapes, forcing letter-by-letter reading: https://lnkd.in/e7tCHxUD 👉 Keep all caps for short labels or acronyms only. 2️⃣ Keep an optimal line length Long lines make it hard for the eye to jump to the next line, while very short lines break reading rhythm. Based on classic readability research by Emil Ruder and later UX studies: https://lnkd.in/eJsTZT3w 👉 Aim for ~45–75 characters per line for comfortable reading. 3️⃣ Use generous line height Dense text increases cognitive load and reduces comprehension, especially for users with dyslexia. Recommended in Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (1.4.12 Text Spacing): https://lnkd.in/eam2Uqs5 👉 Use at least 1.4–1.6 line height for body text. 4️⃣ Don’t squeeze letters together Tight letter spacing makes words harder to parse, especially for users with visual or cognitive impairments. Supported by research from British Dyslexia Association: https://lnkd.in/eKc_2HPr 👉 Slightly increasing spacing (e.g., ~0.02–0.05em) can improve readability. 5️⃣ Avoid justified text blocks Perfectly aligned edges may look clean, but they create irregular spacing (“rivers of white”) that disrupt reading flow. 👉 Prefer left-aligned text for most content. 6️⃣ Give paragraphs room to breathe Large text blocks discourage reading and increase cognitive effort. 👉 Use spacing between paragraphs and keep them short (3–5 lines max). 7️⃣ Design for zoom and scaling Users should be able to zoom up to 200% without losing content or readability. 👉 Fixed heights and cramped layouts often break here. 8️⃣ Support scanning, not just reading Most users don’t read - they scan. Structured text helps them find what they need faster.     AI is reshaping how we learn, but we can’t assume everyone starts from the same place. Last Saturday marked the International Day of Education, and leaders and practitioners highlighted something fundamental: equity must be intentional, not accidental. That means building systems and practices that ensure AI helps everyone, not just those already well‑resourced. And asking hard questions about access, design, and impact: 👉 Are our tools informed by diverse voices and contexts? 👉 Do they empower educators and learners, or simply automate existing patterns? 👉 What support do learners who are furthest from opportunity actually need? Several global initiatives, from OECD research on generative AI to partnerships between major tech firms and education organisations, are pointing in the right direction. They focus on frameworks that emphasise fairness, teacher‑AI teaming, and evaluation of real learning outcomes. But there’s a deeper lesson here for all of us: equity isn’t a checkbox. It’s a design principle that has to be baked into every stage of innovation, from data and algorithms to deployment and feedback loops. When we do this well, AI can expand opportunity; when we don’t, it risks replicating historic gaps at scale.

    Inclusive design is not just about the font you choose. It is about how your content behaves when it meets a different nervous system. Last week, we pruned your typography. This week, we are looking at the soil. We are auditing your media and structure. In our rush for "engagement," corporate communications often rely on visual shortcuts like flashing GIFs, color-coded alerts, and walls of emojis. Marketing calls these "hacks." I call them Barriers. When you rely on a color change to signal "danger," you lock out the colorblind. When you replace words with a string of emojis, you create chaos for a screen reader user (hearing "Face with tears of joy" five times in a row). When you post a video without captions, you tell the Deaf and Auditory Processing communities that they are not your audience. Accessibility is not a "feature" for a minority group. It is an indicator of Organizational Health. If your content requires perfect vision, perfect hearing, and neurotypical processing speed to understand... your content is flawed. Below is The Inclusive Content Audit (Part 2). We moved beyond fonts to look at media, structure, and interaction. Here are 9 Ways to Operationalize Inclusion in your content: 1. The Emoji Restraint ❌ Barrier: Emojis read aloud via screen readers as clunky descriptions. ✅ Fix: Use clear words to convey tone. Keep emojis at the end of sentences rather than in the middle. 2. The Caption Mandate ❌ Barrier: Audio/Video posted "naked." ✅ Fix: Burned-in open captions. (This helps ADHD brains like mine focus just as much as it helps Deaf users). 3. The Contrast Rule ❌ Barrier: Text over busy, semi-transparent backgrounds. ✅ Fix: Solid color backgrounds behind text blocks to reduce visual noise. 4. The "Color + Shape" Rule ❌ Barrier: Using only color to convey meaning (e.g., Red = Error). ✅ Fix: Pair color with a distinct shape or icon label. 5. The Alt-Text Discipline ❌ Barrier: Images with file names like "IMG_5920.jpg". ✅ Fix: Descriptive, concise Alternative Text. 6. The Header Hierarchy ❌ Barrier: Manually bolding text to look like a header. ✅ Fix: Using actual "Heading Styles" (H1, H2) so screen readers can navigate the structure. 7. The Motion Control ❌ Barrier: Auto-playing GIFs or flashing content. ✅ Fix: Static images or user-controlled "Play" buttons. (Protect your team from vestibular triggers). 8. The Data Summary ❌ Barrier: Complex charts with no text explanation. ✅ Fix: A simple text summary beneath the visual. 9. The Permanent Label ❌ Barrier: Form field labels that disappear once you start typing. ✅ Fix: Labels that remain visible above the field. (Reduces cognitive load and working memory strain). The Verdict: Low-friction content is high-impact content.
