Back to Basics: Why Sweden’s Shift Away from Screens Deserves Attention Recent discussions about schools in Sweden moving away from excessive screen use and returning to books, handwriting, and direct instruction raise an important educational question: Have we confused digital access with deep learning? Technology is powerful. But it is a tool — not a pedagogy. Scenario 1 – When Screens Dominate (The Drawback) A Grade 5 classroom relies heavily on tablets. Students type all assignments, read from digital texts, and complete assessments online. At first glance, engagement looks high — devices are open, screens are bright. However: • Students struggle to sustain attention beyond short tasks. • Reading comprehension drops when texts are long. • Writing lacks structure because autocorrect and predictive text compensate for weak spelling and grammar foundations. • Handwriting fluency declines, affecting cognitive processing and memory retention. Over time, teachers notice that while students are digitally fluent, their depth of thinking, patience, and analytical writing skills weaken. Research increasingly suggests that handwriting activates different neural pathways linked to memory consolidation and conceptual understanding. Scenario 2 – Balanced Traditional Foundations (The Merit) Now imagine another classroom where: • Students read physical books. • They annotate margins. • They write summaries by hand before drafting digitally. • Discussions happen face-to-face before any device is used. In this setting: • Students build stamina for deep reading. • Writing by hand strengthens retention and cognitive clarity. • Classroom dialogue improves communication and critical thinking. • Technology is used intentionally — not constantly. The result? Students are not anti-technology. They are digitally competent AND cognitively strong. This conversation is not about rejecting innovation. It is about protecting foundational skills: - Deep reading - Structured writing - Focus and sustained attention - Cognitive endurance - Human interaction Perhaps the question is not “Digital or Traditional?” The real question is: Are we using technology to enhance thinking or replace it? As educators and leaders, balance is not a trend. It is a responsibility.

Gen Z is the first generation in over a century to score lower on core cognitive measures than the one before it. Screen saturated schooling is a central reason why. Neuroscientist and educator Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, PhD, MEd testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation on what he described as a measurable reversal in cognitive development trends across the developed world. For most of the twentieth century, average cognitive performance steadily rose, a pattern known as the 'Flynn Effect'. Beginning in the mid 2000s, that trend stalled. In multiple domains, it has now reversed. Horvath argued that foundational cognitive skills required for deep learning are weakening, even as educational investment and classroom technology have expanded. Evidence shows a consistent pattern across more than 80 countries: Students who report higher daily computer use in classrooms perform worse in reading, maths, and science. More screen exposure corresponds to lower performance across income levels and national contexts. Apparent benefits attributed to moderate classroom technology use disappear once testing mode effects are controlled for. When assessments shifted from paper to digital formats, students with limited device familiarity were penalized, creating the illusion that screen use improved learning. When this distortion is removed, the advantage vanishes. When digital interventions are benchmarked against ordinary classroom instruction, most general use educational technologies underperform standard teaching. One to one laptop programs, fully online instruction, and broad classroom technology integration consistently fall below traditional methods. Only narrowly constrained tools, such as adaptive drills for basic skills, show modest gains, and even these do not strengthen deep understanding. The data reflects a mismatch between how human cognition develops and how digital platforms structure attention. Human attention systems are not designed for constant task switching. Digital environments are. Even in academic settings, screens condition habits of rapid checking, fragmented focus, and shallow processing. Memory formation weakens. Comprehension suffers. Sustained attention, deep reading, and complex reasoning are being systematically undertrained. Handwritten note taking, for instance, outperforms typing because it requires summarization and conceptual organization rather than transcription. The testimony does not claim that technology is inherently harmful but that that large scale, unregulated digital adoption has produced a structural mismatch between learning environments and cognitive development. Intelligence is being reshaped. Screens change how students think. Education policy shapes national cognitive capacity decades into the future. If classrooms are optimized for device use and engagement metrics rather than how human cognition develops, the consequences should not surprise us.

Cognitive ability does not suddenly emerge in school years. It is built much earlier, through language and movement. A 2025 longitudinal study found that plasticity in early language and motor development during toddlerhood and preschool years strongly predicts later intelligence scores. In other words, the way a child learns to speak, imitate, grasp, balance and coordinate movement is not separate from cognition, it is foundational to it. The developing brain does not compartmentalize skills the way adults do. Language circuits interact with motor systems. Sensorimotor experience refines cortical networks. Repetition strengthens neural efficiency. This matters because early childhood represents a window of heightened neuroplasticity. Changes during this period are not incremental, they are structural. The implication is clear: supporting expressive language, motor exploration, and imitation in the first five years is not enrichment. It is neural architecture building. We often focus on academic readiness. But long before formal education begins, the brain is already constructing the scaffolding for later intelligence. #AI literacy has evolved from luxury to necessity. Under the EU AI Act, companies have until February 1, 2025 to comply with the Article 4 requirements. What does that mean? They must “take measures to ensure, to their best extent, a sufficient level of AI literacy of their staff” and those acting on their behalf. While there’s little detail on the specifics, the intent is clear: enable those who develop, deploy, and use AI to better understand the technology and, in turn, make more informed decisions to maximize its potential benefits and minimize its potential risks. Here are some framing principles: ▶ Go beyond the basics. A baseline is necessary, but only a starting point. ▶ Appreciate that literacy is multi-dimensional. It should span the swirling mix of technical, business, practical, and ethical implications of AI. ▶ Appreciate that it’s also contextual. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, literacy should be tailored to different roles to account for different responsibilities, and be cross-functional to reflect the real-world collaboration that #AIgovernance demands. ▶ Prepare for a never-ending journey. The field of AI is dynamic, and continuous learning is critical to stay up-to-date on developments, trends, industry standards, and best practices. Here are some steps to take: ✅ Assess current literacy levels. ✅ Emphasize inclusivity (e.g., because not everyone will be starting at the same place). ✅ Take a holistic, programmatic approach, with foundational content supplemented by tailored learning paths. ✅ Identify champions to embrace the initiative and welcome volunteers who want to contribute to the cause. ✅ Create on-going education opportunities (e.g., through awareness campaigns, reminders, and refreshers). ✅ Create and share resources to supplement training (e.g., newsletters, blogs, and guides). ✅ Consider third-party resources to augment capabilities and broaden horizons (e.g., like those from the IAPP for the #AIGP, or ones I shared here https://lnkd.in/eirmKxD8). ✅ Regularly monitor progress and assess effectiveness. ✅ Document everything for auditability and accountability. Ultimately, embedding AI literacy within your company isn't just a check-box for compliance. It’s how you build a modern workforce to drive responsible innovation and unlock sustainable growth.

Process – Changing how pupils learn. Examples include group work, independent projects, hands-on experiments, or guided practice. Product – Allowing choice in how pupils demonstrate learning. This could be through presentations, reports, art, or digital media. Learning Environment – Creating a classroom atmosphere that supports different learning styles—quiet corners for focus, interactive stations for collaboration. 2. Practical Strategies for Teachers Flexible Grouping – Switch between mixed-ability and ability-based groups depending on the activity. Tiered Assignments – Design tasks with different levels of complexity. Choice Boards – Offer pupils a menu of tasks to complete. Scaffolding – Provide step-by-step support that is gradually removed as independence grows. Ongoing Assessment – Use quick checks for understanding to guide instructional adjustments in real time. 3. Why Differentiation Matters Equity in Learning – Every child gets access to the curriculum at their own readiness level. Boosts Engagement – Pupils are more motivated when learning feels relevant and achievable. “Differentiation sounds great… until you actually have to plan it.” In my previous post, I unpacked the confusion around L1, L2, L3 and how they connect with Bloom’s Taxonomy. But the real question I kept hearing was: 👉 “Okay… but HOW do I actually implement this in my classroom?” Here’s a simple, practical way to do it—without creating 3 different lesson plans. 👇 Step 1: Start with ONE clear objective Example: Students will understand and use adjectives Step 2: Design 3 tiered tasks (L1–L3) ◇ L1 (Remember & Understand) Identify adjectives in a sentence ◇ L2 (Apply & Analyze) Use adjectives to describe a picture ◇ L3 (Create & Extend) Write a short descriptive paragraph Step 3: Teach ONCE. Differentiate TASKS. ✔ Whole-class concept explanation ✔ Then give level-based tasks ✔ Let students move flexibly (not fixed labels) Step 4: Add SIMPLE classroom strategies ✅ Flexible grouping – Pair or group based on readiness ✅ Choice – Write / speak / draw ✅ Teacher movement – Support L1, stretch L3 ✅ Peer learning – Let students learn from each other Step 5: Close with a quick check Exit ticket: “Write one sentence using an adjective.” And that’s it. No extra lesson plans. No overwhelming planning. Just one lesson… designed with multiple pathways. Because differentiation isn’t about doing more— It’s about doing it smarter. 🚨🚸AI literacy cannot live inside computer-science If we treat AI literacy merely as “another subject,” we will reproduce the same inequities that algorithmic systems already amplify. The report’s interviews reveal AI literacy as a civic capability that blends technical fluency, critical sociotechnical awareness and ethical agency. AI literacy cannot live inside computer-science silos; it must be threaded through writing workshops, history debates and science labs, where students interrogate training data, iterate with generative tools and weigh social consequences. Only then does “power-user” status translate into collective capacity to shape, not just survive, the next wave of automation.  Recommendations 1. Codify a living, cross-disciplinary AI literacy standard and revisit it annually: Use the three-pillar framework (technical foundations, creative/application practices, ethical agency) as the spine, but convene mixed panels of students, teachers and industry to update exemplars each year, ensuring the standard evolves as models and risks. 2. Redesign teacher professional development (PD) as inquiry studios, not one-off tool trainings: Build semester-length cycles in which educators prototype classroom uses of AI, share transcripts of human-AI dialogue, critique failures and co-author open resources. 3. Establish student “AI observatories” that audit real systems in the community: Partner with local civic agencies or companies to give learners access to anonymized model outputs (e.g., chatbot logs, computer-vision classifications). Students test for bias, draft mitigation proposals and present findings to stakeholders, embedding ethics in authentic practice. 4. Integrate generative AI as a formative evidence engine, not a content factory: Require that any classroom use pairs AI-generated drafts with metacognitive reflection artifacts (chat transcripts, verbal defenses, peer critiques) so learning gains are visible and misconceptions surfaced early. Flexible seating, quiet corners, and visual supports ensure all learners feel safe, focused, and included. Effective differentiation is grounded in student voice, choice, and agency. It’s about knowing your students well, using data and observation, and responding thoughtfully to their evolving needs. Teachers are told to differentiate. No one shows them what it actually looks like. So let me make this concrete. No theory. No buzzwords. Just real classrooms on a regular school day. Here is what differentiation actually looks like in practice. → Tiered assignments. One group practices the core skill with guidance while another applies the same concept to a real-world problem. → Choice boards. Students show understanding by writing, building, recording, or presenting instead of all submitting the same worksheet. → Flexible grouping. A student works independently today, in a skill group tomorrow, and as a peer coach next week. → Learning stations. One table practices with manipulatives, one works directly with the teacher, one tackles a challenge task. → Anchor activities. Early finishers extend learning instead of waiting or distracting others. → Compacting. A student who already mastered the content skips repetition and moves straight to deeper work. → Scaffolded notes. Some students get sentence starters while others generate their own summaries. → Varied texts. Everyone studies the same topic using texts at different reading levels. → Open-ended tasks. Students solve the same problem using different strategies and explain their thinking. → Multiple entry points. A lesson begins with a story, a visual, or a question so no learner starts locked out. This is not chaos. This is intentional design. Differentiation is how we respect brain diversity without lowering expectations.
