    No More Backbenchers! A simple shift in classroom seating—triggered by a Malayalam film—is sparking a real movement in Kerala schools. Today's article in The Times Of India reports this case of reel affecting change in real! Traditional rows of benches are built for passive listening. We've all grown up in school where one person talks, the rest receive. But learning doesn’t happen in a straight line—it happens in spirals, sparks, and shared stories. What if our classrooms reflected that? Flexible seating isn’t just a design choice—it’s a pedagogical statement. It tells children: “Your voice matters. Your way of learning is valid.” From U-shaped arrangements to open circles, bean bags, standing desks, and learning nooks, schools across the world are waking up to this truth: The way we seat children can shape the way they think, collaborate, and grow. Why does this matter? - It fosters small group collaboration and peer learning. - It enables pair work and student-led exploration. - It allows for quiet corners and reflective time. - It frees the teacher from the “front”—and places them in the center, as a facilitator. - It breaks down power hierarchies. Everyone is equal. No stigma about where you sit. As Dr. U Vivek notes in the article, “This new arrangement gives the teacher a bird’s eye view… but more importantly, it gives each child the space to be seen, heard, and understood.” Flexibility in seating reflects flexibility in thinking. In fact, school designers and architects like Rosan Bosch have long championed learning spaces that are modular and organic—environments that invite movement, creativity, and play. Her work with Vittra School in Sweden is a powerful reminder that space IS a teacher. Similarly, Danish Kurani's work in school design emphasises the need for voices of practitioners and students in the design process. He believes that new teaching methods can't be adopted without the change in the classroom design. Similarly, the STUDIO SCHOOLS TRUST in the UK, the Reggio Children (Reggio Emilia) approach in Italy, and Big Picture Learning schools in the U.S. all embrace flexible learning environments. These aren’t “alternative” anymore—they are becoming essential. If we want to create classrooms of curiosity, critical thinking, and compassion—let’s begin with the seating. It’s not about removing backbenchers. It’s about removing the very idea of front and back. And here’s the best part—this is the lowest-stakes ‘edtech’ upgrade we can make. No fancy gadgets, no big budgets. Seems like a no-brainer to me! Let’s stop teaching. Let’s start facilitating. Let’s redesign learning—one seat at a time.

    Most parks don’t fail because of poor design. They fail because ecology is ignored. A park is not just pathways, lawns, and benches — it is a living system that needs to be designed with water, soil, climate, biodiversity, and human behaviour in mind. Dead plantations? Often a result of poor species selection, wrong soil mixes, or ignoring wind & sunlight patterns. Dry landscapes or waterlogging? Caused by missing contour studies, faulty drainage planning, and zero water-balance analysis. No birds, no shade, no life? Because biodiversity wasn’t considered. Every tree species supports a specific set of insects & birds — and when you plant the wrong species, the entire chain collapses. This is why ecological planning is not optional — it’s the foundation of long-lasting public spaces. I once had a student who struggled not with ability, but with fear—fear of making mistakes, of raising their hand, of being wrong. Traditional instruction kept nudging them to “speak up more.” But what actually worked? Giving them a safe space to think quietly, letting them submit reflections anonymously, then slowly offering low-stakes speaking opportunities. They bloomed—on their own terms. 🔍 This is what barrier-free learning looks like. Not pushing students harder, but asking: What’s in their way—and how do I remove it? Some powerful methodologies that support this mindset: ✅ Inquiry-Based Learning – Let curiosity drive the lesson. ✅ Scaffolded Instruction – Support step-by-step until confidence builds. ✅ Metacognitive Reflection – Teach students to know how they learn. ✅ Growth-Oriented Assessment – Focus on progress, not just performance. 🌿 Students don’t need force.     CAN BUILDINGS HEAL? It may sound like a stretch until you step into a space that instantly calms your nerves. That opens you up creatively and socially. That makes you feel seen, safe, and somehow more yourself. Now imagine if every school were designed with that in mind. For too long, we’ve treated school buildings as containers for curriculum, as silent backdrops to learning. But the unquestionable truth is this. Buildings are not passive. They influence physiology, psychology, and even identity. In our work, we’ve seen this firsthand. When we design schools using principles from neuroscience, biophilic design, and salutogenic design, children don’t just learn better, they feel better. Lowered stress. Greater engagement. Stronger relationships and a sense of community and belonging that can’t be gained from a textbook. From sunlight and sensory variety to nooks for retreating and zones for movement, every design choice we make either supports or undermines health and well-being. This isn’t just aesthetics or even functionality. It’s biology. As we write in our book, "Building Minds", connection, coherence, and healing are not luxuries—they are foundations. So yes, buildings can heal. But only when we stop designing around instruction—and start designing around humans. What if the school itself became a daily dose of well-being for every child and adult inside it? That’s the question we’re asking. And answering. Every day, with every school we design.

    The environment teaches before the teacher does. Why Environment Matters ? The physical and social environment of a classroom directly affects how students behave, engage, and learn. Research in educational psychology shows that behavior is often a response to the structure around us. When the classroom is inclusive, organized, and supportive, disruptive behaviors naturally reduce, while cooperation and focus increase. Simply put: Change the setting → Behavior changes automatically. How Settings Influence Behavior 1. Seating Arrangements Rows facing forward encourage teacher-centered learning, but can limit peer interaction. Group tables or clusters promote collaboration, peer support, and communication. Flexible seating (beanbags, standing desks, cushions) allows movement and self-regulation. Example: A student who fidgets constantly in a hard chair may calm down on a wobble stool or yoga ball. 2. Visual Structure Visual schedules, labeled areas, and clear routines reduce anxiety. Students know what to expect, which minimizes tantrums or refusals. Example: A child with ADHD who struggles with transitions calms when shown a “Now–Next–Then” chart. 3. Calm Corners / Safe Spaces A cozy area with cushions or noise-cancelling headphones gives children a chance to regulate emotions without disturbing peers. Example: Instead of shouting in frustration, a child can choose to go to the calm corner and return ready to learn. 4. Classroom Layout Wide, clear pathways prevent chaos and accidents. Defined spaces (reading corner, group work area, sensory station) create order. Example: A child who usually runs around aimlessly now knows exactly where to go for each activity. 5. Noise & Sensory Management Some students are distracted by noise or lights. Providing headphones, softer lighting, or sound-absorbing materials reduces overstimulation. Example: A student on the autism spectrum who covers their ears during lessons can focus better with noise-cancelling headphones. Practical Examples of Small Changes → Big Impact Problem: Students shout over each other in discussions. Change: Use talking sticks or assign group roles. Result: Respectful turn-taking. Problem: Child constantly leaves their seat. Change: Provide a wiggle cushion or assign a classroom job requiring movement. Result: Energy is redirected into purposeful behavior. Problem: Transitions cause meltdowns. Change: Add a timer or song for cleanup/transition. Result: Predictability reduces stress. Problem: Students get distracted during writing. Change: Place dividers or use individual lap desks. Result: Improved focus. Problem: A child refuses group activities. Change: Start with pair work in a safe setting, then gradually increase group size. Result: Social participation grows step by step. Problem: Chaos at the start of the day. Change: Morning routine board (hang bag → sit → choose calm activity). Result: Smooth, calm beginnings instead of stress.

    Wood buildings lower stress, improve focus, and support healthier indoor environments — and they cost less to build. For schools, that’s not a nice-to-have. That should be the goal. Research consistently shows that exposed wood in interior spaces reduces cortisol levels and improves cognitive performance. For students spending 15,000 hours inside school buildings, the material those buildings are made from matters. And schools across the country are starting to act on it. In Hempstead, New York, the Evergreen Charter School opened last fall as one of the East Coast’s first mass timber K-12 buildings. The five-story hybrid CLT and steel structure surrounds 700 students with exposed wood, natural light, and rooftop learning spaces — designed not just to lower embodied carbon, but to create a calmer, healthier environment for students and teachers in one of Nassau County’s most underserved communities. In Washington State, 20 modular CLT classrooms were built across five elementary schools in a single summer. The exposed timber interiors replaced aging portables with permanent spaces specifically designed to generate the biophilic responses that support learning. In Buckeye, Arizona, the 96,000 SF Blue Horizon Elementary School was fast-tracked from groundbreaking to opening day in just six months — built with light-frame wood trusses and I-joists that double as biophilic design elements, filtering sunlight through interiors inspired by the desert’s slot canyons. The common thread: wood-based building systems — light frame, mass timber, and hybrid — deliver schools that are faster to build, more cost-effective, and measurably better for the people inside them. That matters now more than ever. Congress just introduced the Rebuild America’s Schools Act, proposing $130 billion to repair and replace school facilities nationwide. With 54% of U.S. school districts needing to update or replace major building systems, the opportunity isn’t just to rebuild.     No more ‘front’ or ‘back’ benches! Just learning spaces where every student is equally close to the teacher, and everybody can see everybody else. This powerful idea is gaining quiet but firm ground in Kerala thanks to a low-budget, high-impact Malayalam film called Sthanarthi Sreekuttan - and the courage of a few schools willing to reimagine what a classroom can be (This had already found ground in some schools in Delhi and Punjab.) It doesn’t take fancy infrastructure or radical changes. Just the timeless Indian spirit of jugaad :). And in that spirit, I would like to propose a hybrid approach to the new idea. The ideal classroom should have a modular formation - the same desks and chairs that form a U-shape for discussion-based learning can be quickly unhinged and stretched into rows for the subjects where a projector or whiteboard is required. A U-shaped arrangement is perfect for discussions in social studies or language classes, where students benefit from interacting with each other. In contrast, row-based seating works best for subjects like math or science, where focused attention on the board or projector is important. With modular desks, we are letting the space adapt to the subject, not the other way around.   Also, for the record - I have been both a frontbencher and a backbencher. and both by choice, not compulsion. Some of us liked our teachers, sport, music biology and mathematics all in equal measure.   But that’s another story. #classroomofthefuture #reformationnotrearrangement #betterlearning

    𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬. 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬.   We usually link urban nature to health through thermal comfort, pollution, or physical activity. But this 2025 study on redesigned schoolyards found something interesting about behavior.   In 11 #Barcelona schools, asphalt schoolyards were redesigned with green (vegetation), blue (fountains), and gray (shade structures) elements.   Here’s what happened: 🔹 Students felt less heat and more comfort 🔹 The playground became more attractive and usable 🔹 Children were calmer and showed better attention and classroom behavior 🔹 Conflicts during recess decreased   But the most interesting change was social! Before the intervention, the yard was dominated by football. Boys occupied the center, and many girls stayed at the edges looking for shade. After adding shaded areas and places to sit, children gathered, talked, and mixed more.   In other words, the benefits were not only thermal but also social interaction, comfort, and inclusion. For planners and practitioners: 🔸 Consider usability when designing for heat reduction. 🔸 Shade, seating, and small spatial choices shape social life. 🔸 Consider children and vulnerable users in everyday environmental design.     If you’re an architect, place makers or designer, study an old Indian school building. Observe the top view. Why? A simple C-shaped plan. Nothing flashy. Just thoughtful design. That C-shaped layout wasn’t just an architectural decision. It solved multiple problems at once. • A central courtyard the heart of the school. • A better assembly space. • A safer play area within sight. • A place for learning, celebrations, conversations, sports, and community. • Long verandas protected classrooms from the sun and rain. • High ceiling, big windows, Cross ventilation and sloping roofs for natural cooling. • Easy supervision on students • Campus with clarity instead of confusion. The structure wasn’t asking to adapt to it. It was designed around behavior and observation. Observation of climate. Observation of students behaviour. Observation of how people move, gather, learn, and interact. Remarkably these were designed without AI, simulations, or advanced software. Somewhere along the way, I feel we’ve started celebrating complexity. -We design for photographs instead of everyday life. -For statements instead of stories. -For novelty instead of longevity.
