Recently, we faced a serious and eye-opening issue during testing a prototype. We procured electrolytic capacitors from a supplier. On paper, everything looked correct. Branding, voltage rating, capacitance All matched the BOM. Assembly was completed. The device was powered ON. Within seconds, one capacitor blasted. During the failure analysis, the real problem surfaced. Inside the outer capacitor shell, there was another smaller capacitor hidden inside. That internal capacitor had: • A much lower voltage rating • Lower actual capacitance than what was printed outside • The outer markings claimed a high-voltage capacitor. • The internal component clearly was not designed for that voltage. When the rated voltage was applied: • The inner capacitor overheated • Internal pressure built up rapidly • The capacitor burst violently This was not a design flaw. This was not a misuse condition. This was a fake / reworked component entering the supply chain. In industrial or consumer electronics The loss is not just the capacitor. It’s product reliability. It’s customer trust. It’s brand reputation. Buy only from trusted and traceable sources Perform incoming QC for critical components Check ESR, ripple rating, weight, and construction Design with proper voltage and thermal margins In hardware, quality stays invisible when things work but becomes painfully visible when they don’t. Fake components are real. And sometimes, they explode before you even ship the product. Stay alert. Design responsibly. Build for the long run. The Government has set the ball rolling by undertaking many #reforms in the recent past, including goods and services tax (#GST) and labour codes. At Confederation of Indian Industry, we believe that this momentum should accelerate through further reforms in areas like power, logistics, labour, land, and #easeofdoing business to keep pace with dynamic global changes. A few immediate ones we recommend - 1. Boosting #Manufacturing Competitiveness: the way to encourage manufacturing is really to see how we create greater value addition in India. An inter-ministerial group could be established to look at manufacturing competitiveness. Measures such as technology tie-ups, and clear policy frameworks especially on Customs duty rate over the next three to five years can be looked at. Specific products can be identified, for e.g. compressors, wafers, APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients), and chemicals. 2. Reducing Production Costs: Addressing high factor costs across land, logistics, power, etc. Privatization of state electricity boards and rationalisation of industrial tariffs by incentivizing states can be undertaken. 3. Strategic #Disinvestment: Fast-tracking the disinvestment of public sector units and using the proceeds for investments in transformational projects (like high-speed rail) and supporting state reforms is recommended. Free land available with the government can also be developed into industrial parks through PPP models. 4. Sovereign Wealth Fund Proposal: Creation of a $50 billion sovereign wealth fund, focused on advanced manufacturing and strategic sectors, is suggested to provide risk capital for long-term national interests. 5. #Tax simplification: The industry calls for further simplification of tax and regulatory processes, more effective dispute resolution. 6. Ease of doing business: there should be a statute of limitations in all economic laws to reduce uncertainty. Decriminalisation will significantly help improve ease of doing business. Further, Ministries should digitally publish an updated, clear, and comprehensive list of requirements such as fees, timelines, and grievance procedures that one has to follow.

Handing over from one team to the next using a Shift Handover Over Board. In a newly created small cell of 8 staff per shift in a large factory, they were struggling with 2 issues: 1) communicating key messages from one shift to the next oncoming shift, 2) arriving day shift not knowing the department status from the night shift. We piloted a Shift Hand Over Board showing key messages indicated by green (yes) or red (no). These key criteria were selected via a brainstorming session with the combined team. The key purpose: What key pieces of information you’d like to know that ensures you have a good day? Since their Supervisor to Supervisor hand over was only 5 mins, they wanted to capture the important things, ensuring nothing was missed. The Board allowed them to do this. They also wanted to test an Hour-by-Hour chart added to the board, showing at an instant the rate of production for each hour block. While this had only just started, they were optimistic of success, as other departments in the site used the same tool. You’ll also note they included the latest Gemba Walk Observation sheet, indicating findings of the recent Gemba Walk. One of the clearest drivers of the UK’s economic stagnation has been weak productivity growth, particularly relative to other major economies such as the US. The chart highlights a stark divergence since the 2008 financial crisis with US output per worker hour rising steadily, whilst the UK equivalent has largely flatlined. This gap reflects a combination of weak business investment, persistent skills shortages, and regulatory and planning constraints that have weighed on economic activity. Reversing this trend is central to any credible UK economic strategy as even modest improvements in productivity growth would have powerful cumulative effects on GDP, tax revenues and debt sustainability. There is no shortage of policy options, but the most compelling revolve around a sustained upturn in public and private investment in infrastructure, energy security and AI adoption. At the same time, a renewed focus on skills, vocational training and labour market participation would help address structural bottlenecks. Taken together, these measures offer the new Prime Minister a viable path to closing the productivity gap and, over time, easing the UK’s substantial fiscal constraints. Even with the best hacks, organizations often struggle to manage time effectively. As legendary management consultant W. Edwards Deming noted in 'Out of the Crisis: “94% of problems stem from systems, not people.” 🔑 So, how can organizations elevate productivity at the system level? Daniel Markovitz’s January 2021 HBR article (shared herewith) offers four impactful strategies: 1️⃣ Tiered Huddles: Regular, structured meetings across all levels—from frontline teams to executives—enable faster decision-making and reduce email overload. Long email chains often breed miscommunication and procrastination. 2️⃣ Visibility: Utilize physical or virtual task boards to track workflows and downtime. Transparency not only highlights bottlenecks but also ensures equitable workload distribution, fostering better team productivity. 3️⃣ Clear Communication Protocols: Establish clear channels for signaling urgency (e.g.: Batman’s Bat Signal 🦇) to minimize unnecessary interruptions and confusion. 4️⃣ Align Responsibility with Authority: Empower employees to make decisions within their roles, eliminating bottlenecks and reducing frustration. Team productivity thrives when responsibilities are balanced with decision-making authority. 💡These strategies are more than operational tweaks—they create a culture where streamlined systems drive both efficiency and employee satisfaction.
