    Billions of people unlock their phone with their face every day. Apple Face ID. Google face unlock. Neither would pass the identity standard the EU is about to enforce 😳 And here's the uncomfortable part: the verification most banks use today wouldn't either. Document-based identity verification was never designed for the digital world. Passports have UV and infrared security features that can only be checked physically. Online, you're verifying a photograph of a secure document. A photograph. That was fine when faking an identity required skill, time, and resources. In 2026, AI does it in seconds. → Synthetic identities pass document capture → AI-generated faces clear liveness checks → Deepfakes defeat the "blink twice, turn your head" routine → Full identity packages are assembled faster than compliance teams can update their rules Verifying a document no longer means you've verified a person. And that's a fraud problem, not just a compliance one. Governments see it. That's why they're not patching the old model - they're replacing it with digital-native identity. Government-backed eIDs that are cryptographically assured, not photographed. You're not trusting a scan. You're trusting a digitally signed identity that AI can't fake. And regulation is now forcing the pace. eIDAS 2.0 is law. The AML Regulation update hits in July 2027. Banks, insurers, and telecoms are being pushed toward higher-assurance identity - fast. But 150+ eID schemes exist worldwide, each with different standards. Integrating them individually doesn't scale.     Attackers can send emails that look like they’re from your company without ever touching your systems. They spoof your domain, impersonate your executives, and target your customers. This can turn into real financial loss. Customers pay fake invoices. Vendors update payment details based on a fraudulent message. Employees get pulled into credential or payment scams that look legitimate. For a small business, that can mean lost revenue, recovery costs, and operational disruption. Email authentication helps reduce this risk. SPF and DKIM verify sending systems. DMARC ties it together and tells receiving servers how to handle messages that fail checks. When configured and enforced, many spoofed emails can be filtered or blocked before they reach inboxes. It also gives you visibility into who is trying to use your domain. It’s worth checking where you stand: Ask your MSP or IT team if SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are configured and actively monitored. Confirm your DMARC policy is enforced, not just set to monitor. Make sure you can review and act on DMARC reports. This is basic protection that’s easy to put in place, inexpensive to maintain, and can make a meaningful difference, especially given how much business communication and payments still rely on email.     I spent years at SuccessFactors running SAS 70 audits with full transparency, giving customers the actual workbooks so they knew exactly what was being tested. That process helped shape what became SOC 2. That was nearly two decades ago. The infrastructure has changed beyond recognition. The audit model hasn't. So I built the replacement. OTVP — the Open Trust Verification Protocol — replaces static audit reports with verification agents that scan live infrastructure and produce cryptographically signed trust assessments in seconds, not months. This weekend I deployed 11 agents against a real AWS account covering 10 SOC 2 criteria. They found unencrypted databases, users without MFA, missing audit logs, and zero backup coverage — all named by resource ARN, all signed with Ed25519, all chained into Merkle trees for tamper-proof verification.     DigiLocker was never meant to be a digital cupboard. When we conceptualised it in 2014–15, the intent was to create a trusted digital document wallet—not a storage platform. Aadhaar had already established digital identity at scale. DigiLocker was about what citizens could do with that identity. The design was deliberate: documents issued digitally by the source, controlled by the citizen, shared with consent, and verified directly—without photocopies or self-attestation. Adoption took time. Trust arrived in 2016 with CBSE’s digital mark sheets and scaled dramatically during COVID, when physical systems failed and digital wallets held. Today, DigiLocker serves hundreds of millions of Indians. More importantly, it has changed expectations: documents should be digital, authentic, and instantly verifiable.     Identity fraud is undergoing a structural shift. AI is breaking the trust model financial institutions have relied on for decades. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗞𝗬𝗖 was designed for a world where documents were difficult to fake and identity fraud was manual. • Fraud relied on forged or altered physical documents. • Visual inspection was the primary way to establish trust. • The document itself was the foundation of identity. 𝗔𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, fraud shifted from fake documents to compromised digital identities. • Stolen credentials and account takeover became widespread. • Biometrics verification added another layer of trust. • Trust moved from the document to the person behind it. 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 the economics of identity fraud by making fake identities easy to scale. • Deepfakes and synthetic identities bypass visual checks. • Manual verification is no longer sufficient. • Trust is shifting from visual inspection to cryptographically verifiable digital identities. The result is growing pressure on financial institutions to strengthen digital trust: • Higher fraud losses and financial risk. • Increased operational costs for verification and investigations. • More friction in customer onboarding and account recovery. • Rising regulatory expectations for stronger identity verification. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿? Definitely not keep adding more checks to a trust model that was designed for a different era. The answer is to replace the trust model altogether. And this is where digital identity comes in: • Traditional verification asks whether a document looks genuine and whether the person presenting it matches the photo. • Digital identity is different: instead of relying on images it relies on secure digital credentials issued by trusted authorities and verified electronically. The shift is from checking documents to verifying the identity. 𝗛𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: There is no single digital identity model. • Governments, regulators and private organizations are building different digital identity schemes, each with its own standards, credentials, interfaces, etc. • Which means that financial institutions face an integration problem: connecting to a rapidly growing and fragmented digital identity ecosystem and maintaining dozens of separate integrations. This is clearly unrealistic and it is the problem that Hopae solves: • A single integration that connects financial institutions to multiple digital identity providers through a common interface. • As new digital identity schemes emerge, institutions can access them without additional technical integrations. AI is not just changing fraud. It is changing how trust is established in the digital economy. And digital identity is emerging as the new foundation of that trust. A decisive element that will determine our ability to restore digital trust. 🔹 « Identity is now the primary attack surface. » Defenders must secure every identity — human and machine 🔹 with dynamic privilege controls, automation, and AI-enhanced monitoring 🔹and prepare now for LLM abuse and quantum disruption. Machine identities are the fastest-growing attack surface 🔹Growth outpaces human identities 45:1. 🔹Nearly half of machine identities access sensitive data, yet 2/3of organizations don’t treat them as privileged. Quantum readiness is urgent 🔹Quantum computing will break today’s cryptography (RSA, TLS, identity tokens). 🔹Transition planning to quantum-safe algorithms must start now, even before standards are finalized. Large Language Models include prompt injection, data leakage, and misuse of AI agents. So organizations must treat them as a new class of machine identity requiring monitoring, access controls, and secrets management. 🧰 What can we do? ⚒️ 1/ Implement Zero Standing Privileges (ZSP) • Remove always-on entitlements; grant access dynamically and just-in-time. • Minimize lateral movement by revoking privileges once tasks are complete 👥2/ Secure the full spectrum of identities • Differentiate controls for workforce, IT, developers, and machines. • Prioritize machine identities: vault credentials, rotate secrets, and eliminate hard-coded keys. 🛡️ 3/ Embed intelligent privilege controls • Apply session protection, isolation, and monitoring to high-risk access. • Enforce least privilege on endpoints; block or sandbox unknown apps. • Deploy Identity Threat Detection & Response (ITDR) for continuous monitoring. ♻️ 4/ Automate identity lifecycle management • Use orchestration to onboard, provision, rotate, and deprovision identities at scale. • Relieve staff from manual tasks, counter skill shortages, and improve compliance readiness. 5/ Align security with business and regulatory drivers • Build an “identity fabric” across IAM, PAM, cloud, SaaS, and compliance. • Tie metrics (KPIs, ROI, cyber insurance conditions) to board-level priorities. 6/ Prepare for next-generation threats • Establish AI/LLM security policies: control access, monitor usage, audit logs. • Begin phased adoption of post-quantum cryptography to protect long-lived sensitive data.     🔐 The State of Authentication UX in 2024. How people keep track of their passwords, why passwords are bad and what to use instead ↓ Over the years, we’ve been serving users fairly badly when it comes to their authentication experience. We set up rigorous password requirements, we make people go through password recovery loops, we ask security questions, we log out users periodically and once something goes wrong, users get locked out for hours or days. According to the latest research (sources in the comments), that’s where we are today in terms of authentication UX: – 38% of users write passwords down as sticky notes – 32–84% reuse the same password (private/company) – 54% of rely solely on their memory – 40% of fail answering security questions – 32% of use a password manager (e.g. LastPass, 1Password) – 31% of have used FaceID authentication – 29% of have used fingerprint scanning – 25–31% of users reset their passwords at least weekly – 18.75% avg. eCommerce abandonment due to pass resets – 4mins is the avg. time to recover access by password reset – 3h is average employee lock out time due to authentication – 29% had their social profile credentials stolen or leaked – 39% organizations have faced malware/phishing attacks – 29% of the helpdesk time is required to deal with auth issues – 40% of users have 2-Factor-Authentication (2FA) turned on – 65% of products use SMS-based 2FA (vulnerable to SIM swapping) – 95% of companies plan to transition to passwordless auth – 31% of companies are now implementing passkeys We do so for a good reason of course. For the sake of security, on user’s behalf. Yet as Jared Spool said once, usability should prevail over security. If a product is not usable, it’s also not secure. That’s when people start using private email accounts and put passwords on sticky notes because they forget them. So as designers, we try to make it easy to use for people who should have access, often making it totally unusable for people who don’t have access. But different products have different value for different people. So we need to think in terms of stages of security and layers of authentication. The future of authentication UX is passwordless. At minimum, it’s 2FA-based, and at its best, it relies on passkeys (https://passkeys.dev) — a relatively new technology that is now widely supported in all major browsers and on native platforms. With passkeys, users set up their credentials and store them securely on their device, with one set of keys per product or service, without having to type or retype or recover password at all. The experience is seamless and secure, and it works across devices, too. The best authentication is a quiet one. So instead of reviewing password requirements, perhaps we could start abandoning passwords altogether. It will serve users well, creating a quiet and secure auth UX, and it will serve businesses well, saving time, money and waste in security and support. #ux #auth

    Trust in the AI age is being redefined by new approaches to authentication. Here are some of the key recent developments you need to be aware of: 🏷️ Pinterest will start labelling pins as "AI modified" where AI generation or alteration is detected, using both metadata and Pinterest's own classifiers. The platform will also start testing a ‘see fewer’ option on GenAI-labelled Pins, allowing users to avoid AI content for certain categories featuring high volumes of AI modification or generation, including art and beauty. 🏷️ Adobe and the Content Authenticity Initiative announced the public beta launch of the Content Authenticity app, a free tool anyone can use to digitally sign their work and request to opt out of training by AI using Content Credentials. Content Credentials also help provide transparency about how a piece of content may have been captured, generated, or edited over time. 🏷️ Google confirmed SynthID, its proprietary watermarking technology, will be deployed within Gemini's new image editing features, continuing its policy of deploying SynthID within all Gemini products. Google also announced they're experimenting with adding a visible watermark on all images generated by Gemini. 🏷️ LinkedIn announced its native verification process can now be used across partner platforms, providing a "Verified on LinkedIn" badge to confirm a user's identity has been authenticated. Adobe are one of the first to integrate the feature within the new Content Authenticity app (mentioned above) and its Behance platform. 🏷️ Sam Altman's Tools for Humanity, the startup behind the World Human Verification project, unveiled a mobile version of its Orb device designed to determine the difference between a human and an AI agent. The "Orb Mini" scans an individual's eyeballs, providing a "unique identifier on the blockchain to verify you're a human". Let me know if you think I missed anything significant.
