Over five years, it will shift U.S. divisions from traditional mechanized formations toward distributed drone-centric warfare—without asking for more money. šŸ”¹ Each combat division will receive ~1,000 small unmanned systems for ISR, strike, resupply, and jamming. The aim: make drones as ubiquitous as rifles. šŸ”¹ Trials at Hohenfels, Germany replicated Ukraine-style combat: swarms of FPVs, live ISR feeds, cold-weather drone failures, and forward-deployed kill loops. Conventional command structures buckled under the new pace of warfare. šŸ”¹ $36B will be reallocated by cancelling legacy platforms: • Humvee procurement ends • JLTV and M10 light tank programs cancelled • Older Apache helicopters retired • Civilian cuts included šŸ“” Instead, the Army is investing in: • Small drones for recon, strike, and logistics • COTS-powered digital battle networks • $3B in counter-UAS and electronic warfare • New infantry squad vehicles and mobility tools šŸ”¹ Gen.     Hot off the presses....seismic shifts in the Army. Where there is change, there are opportunities...which of these do you think are most impactful? 1. Fast-Track Modernization (by 2026–2028): - GetĀ long-range missilesĀ that can hit moving land and sea targets into the field by 2027. - Dominate the air and electromagnetic space. - PutĀ drones and launched effectsĀ into every division. - MakeĀ counter-drone toolsĀ cheaper, mobile, and part of frontline units. - UseĀ AI at command levelĀ to speed up decision-making. - BringĀ 3D printingĀ and modern manufacturing to field units. - Build upĀ ammunition productionĀ to support a real wartime surge. - Expand our presence in the Indo-PacificĀ with more gear pre-positioned and more joint exercises with allies. 2. Cut the Dead Weight: - Stop buying old gear—think outdated helicopters, HMMWVs, legacy drones. - Roll back legacy sustainment costs and unnecessary climate initiatives. - Cancel wasteful contracts and rein in bloated travel budgets. - Rethink and trim prepositioned stock strategies. - Modernize language training—because mission effectiveness depends on it. 3.     The UK has just published its most comprehensive defence review in 25 years, and it reveals a military on the cusp of its biggest technological transformation since the Second World War. The review's most striking finding isn't about threats or spending—it's about how warfare itself is being fundamentally redefined by technology. As the document starkly notes, drones now kill more people than traditional artillery in Ukraine, and military advantage increasingly comes from speed of innovation rather than size of forces. The technological revolution outlined is comprehensive: Artificial Intelligence becomes central to everything. The review calls for a protected Defence AI Investment Fund and a digital targeting web by 2027 that connects sensors, decision-makers, and weapons across all domains in real-time. Data and digital systems are no longer optional extras—they're foundational to every military capability. Autonomous systems transform the battlefield equation. The UK will establish a Defence Uncrewed Systems Centre by February 2026, moving toward a high-low mix where 20% crewed platforms control 40% reusable autonomous systems and 40% single-use effectors like attack drones. This isn't just about adding drones—it's about completely reimagining how forces operate. Space and cyber become contested battlegrounds. A new CyberEM Command launches by end-2025 to coordinate operations in cyberspace—the only domain under daily attack. Meanwhile, space capabilities become critical as China and Russia's combined satellite fleets grew 70% in recent years, with quantum technologies promising to revolutionise both encryption and navigation. Innovation cycles accelerate dramatically. Defence procurement must shift from 6.5-year contract cycles to three-month rapid commercial exploitation, with a new UK Defence Innovation organisation receiving a ringfenced Ā£400 million annual budget to harness commercial breakthroughs. Advanced weapons reshape deterrence calculations. From hypersonic missiles travelling five times the speed of sound to directed energy weapons like the UK's DragonFire system, the review highlights how precision, range, and speed are transforming military mathematics. This isn't just military modernisation—it's recognition that the character of warfare has changed more in the past decade than in the previous century.     This RAND report is one of the more sober and useful contributions to the AI-in-warfare debate. Instead of hype, it frames AI through 4 enduring military competitions: Quantity vs Quality Hiding vs Finding Centralised vs Decentralised C2 Cyber Offence vs Cyber Defence That framing matters because AI does not replace strategy. It shifts balances. 1. Quantity may regain strategic relevance. AI-enabled uncrewed systems could make ā€œaffordable massā€ more viable. Attritable systems combined with precision could offset reliance on exquisite platforms at least in certain missions. The future force may not be smaller and smarter but larger and networked. 2. The hiding–finding competition becomes sharper, not settled. AI will enhance sensor fusion and targeting and deception. Sophisticated camouflage, spoofing, signature management, AI-enabled misinformation could keep the competition contested. 3. Mission command remains critical. AI does not eliminate the need for human decision authority. Information access, not just cognitive processing, is the limiting factor in command models. AI may support decision cycles, but it doesn't erase the need for distributed trust-based command structures. 4. Cyber defence could strengthen but not dominate. AI may help defenders manage scale and speed, making networks more resilient. But cyber offense will also adapt. Diving deeper. - Overconfidence in ā€œAI-enabled mass.ā€ Mass without integration, sustainment, EW resilience, secure data pipelines becomes expensive confetti. - Underestimating deception and counter-AI. If everyone assumes AI gives superior visibility, adversaries will focus on blinding, spoofing, corrupting the sensing layer. - Command friction. If AI tools are layered onto legacy C2 without doctrinal reform, we risk cognitive overload, unclear authority lines, brittle decision cycles. - Cyber dependency concentration. More AI means more software, more connectivity, more attack surface. If resilience isn't designed in from the beginning, vulnerabilities scale faster than capability. - Transition mismanagement. The report highlights the need for a deliberate transition plan. Fielding AI too fast without trust, testing, training creates risk. Too slowly creates irrelevance. - Assuming first-mover advantage is permanent. Adaptive adversaries close gaps quickly. AI advantage isn't a static asset but a moving competition. - Are we trying to use AI to reinforce old force structures? Or are we prepared to rethink force design, procurement, training, doctrine, political risk tolerance? AI doesn't simply upgrade platforms. It shifts cost curves, changes tempo, alters detection dynamics, affects escalation pathways. If we focus only on the technology layer, without adjusting organisational and strategic foundations, we will miscalculate.     For more than a decade, we've talked about Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2). Over the past two weeks, I watched the future of it being built. Project Dynamis Serial 008 brought together Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, and commercial technologists to rapidly iterate on a next-generation, AI-powered battle management capability under the stress of operationally realistic field conditions. It wasn’t an experiment; it was a rehearsal. While Army operations unfolded at Fort Irwin, our team established an expeditionary Multi-function Air Operations Center (MAOC) at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, bringing together Marines from Project Dynamis, Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory/Futures Directorate, Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic, and industry engineers. Our objective was audacious: Develop a next generation expeditionary battle management C2 capability that seamlessly integrates aviation, fires, intelligence, logistics, maneuver, cyber, space, and electromagnetic operations into a single AI-enabled decision-making environment. So what? Since the Third Offset Strategy, the vision for CJADC2 has been clear. The challenge was never the vision. It's getting the joint force to converge on common software, a common data ontology, and common operational workflows with a single point of accountability. Today something fundamentally different is happening. Instead of building separate Service solutions and attempting to integrate them years later, the Army's NextGen C2 effort, Marine Corps Project Dynamis, and the Navy's Project Overmatch are iterating together on inherently joint solutions from the beginning. That changes everything. Rather than adding another layer to legacy command-and-control systems, we’re leveraging a shared dual-use commercial technology foundation: → Palantir Technologies Maven Smart System (MSS) as the AI-enabled battle management software platform. → Anduril Industries Lattice Edge Data Mesh (EDM) as the common data orchestration layer connecting sensors, platforms, autonomous systems, and command nodes across distributed formations. Technology is advancing too quickly for decade-long integration efforts built around bespoke systems. That's not acceptable when you're operating in a profession where the stakes are so high and the consequences of failure so final. What I witnessed over the past two weeks convinced me that the future of joint warfighting won't be built by integrating separate Service capabilities after the fact. Operators, engineers, and industry partners will collaboratively build it from day one, continuously rehearsing and refining common solutions.     MISSION COMMAND in the Age of Autonomy: Mission Command is one of those timeless military concepts—clear in doctrine, messy in practice. At its core, it’s about giving a subordinate clear commander’s intent: 1. The objective (the what) 2. The purpose (the why) 3. And the freedom to determine the how That last part is not trivial. It’s essential. Mission command thrives on trust. It dies under micromanagement. We’ve said those words for decades, but the emerging fight demands we live them—because we’re entering an age where human commanders will lead teams that move, sense, and strike faster than any human brain can process in real time. This isn’t hypothetical—our new warfighting reality here now, as seen in Ukraine. Across air, land, sea, undersea, space, cyber, and the electromagnetic spectrum, autonomous systems are taking their place alongside human operators: - Loyal wingmen / air drone swarms - Uncrewed surface and undersea vessels - On-orbit autonomous maneuver and targeting - AI-driven cyber defense and offense moving at machine speed In these environments, the ā€œhuman in the loopā€ or ā€œhuman on the loopā€ will often be the slowest element. By the time a micromanaging leader approves the next move, the opportunity may be gone—or the system may already have acted on its own. Mission Command must evolve… the principles don’t change, but the application must. Leaders must be willing to delegate not just to people, but to machines—provided those machines are trained, bounded, and aligned with commander’s intent. That means: > Clear intent and parameters—autonomy is useless without knowing what ā€œsuccessā€ looks like and what’s off-limits. > Trust in the edge—whether the edge is a human operator, a combined human-machine team, or a fully autonomous system executing within the rules of engagement. > Relentless preparation—training that fuses human and machine decision-making under realistic conditions, with contested comms and degraded data feeds. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: too many of our senior leaders today still default to micromanagement. In the age of autonomy, that’s not just inefficient—it’s operationally dangerous. If you can’t let go, you will slow the fight. If you slow the fight, you will lose the fight. This isn’t about abdicating responsibility—it’s about exercising it differently. Leaders have to evolve from controllers of every detail to architects of intent, building frameworks where speed and rigor can coexist. Going forward, we need to re-train and re-tool our leaders—both the ones we have now and the ones we’re grooming for the future—to think and operate in this reality. The doctrine of Mission Command is not new, but our warfighting context is. Victory in the coming battles—whether in the skies, on the seas, in space, cyberspace, or across the electromagnetic spectrum—will belong to the side that gets this right.     The British Army has revealed that its AI-enabled planning system, ASGARD, can reduce corps-level operational planning from around 72 hours to just one. That's a significant shift. Modern military headquarters have to process huge volumes of information from drones, satellites, sensors, electronic warfare systems and intelligence sources before commanders can make informed decisions. AI isn't replacing military judgement. It's helping commanders process data faster, identify priorities and accelerate planning, while keeping humans firmly in control of operational decisions. It's another example of how defence is evolving. The focus is no longer just on platforms. It's increasingly about software, data and the ability to connect information across multiple domains in real time. For industry, this reinforces demand for expertise in: • Artificial intelligence and machine learning • Data fusion • C4ISR software • Cloud and edge computing • Systems integration • Human-machine interfaces As investment continues across these areas, one of the biggest challenges won't be developing the technology. It will be attracting and retaining the engineers, software developers and AI specialists needed to deliver it.

Col. Hosey’s message makes it clear; the ā€œinner ringā€ mentality is dying, and the future belongs to integrated teams operating at the speed of threat. That applies just as much to industry as it does to the force. āž¤Ā š“š”šž š’š©šžšœš­š«š®š¦ š¢š¬ š­š”šž šššš­š­š„šžšŸš¢šžš„š Every article reinforces this: China, Russia, and near-peer adversaries aren’t waiting for tomorrow. They’re shaping the fight through jamming, deception, AI-driven influence, and electromagnetic dominance today. If you can’t operate in a denied or degraded environment, you’re not ready. āž¤Ā š€šˆ š¢š¬ šŽšŸšŸš¢šœš¢ššš„š„š² š­š”šž š€šœšœšžš„šžš«ššš§š­ Several authors show how AI is shaping targeting, decision-making, misinformation, and cyber operations. It’s not theoretical anymore; it's being used at scale, on both sides of the fight. āž¤Ā š„š– š’šØš„šš¢šžš«š¬ / š‚š²š›šžš« šŽš©šžš«ššš­šØš«š¬ ššžš¢š§š  š“š«ššš¢š§šžš šŸšØš« šƒš¢šŸšŸšžš«šžš§š­ š–ššš« What impressed me most was the emphasis on hands-on realism, contested environments, and the expectation that junior leaders make decisions without perfect information. This is the same mindset small GovCon firms must adopt: speed, adaptability, and initiative win. āž¤Ā šˆš§š§šØšÆššš­š¢šØš§ š¢š¬ š‚šØš¦š¢š§š  šŸš«šØš¦ š­š”šž š†š«šØš®š§š š‹šžšÆšžš„ My favorite example was the low-cost, homegrown EW training solutions built in-house by the 10th Mountain Division. Emitters enabling realistic, multi-domain training (<$100 each)? That’s exactly the kind of bottom-up innovation that wins wars and something our federal ecosystem needs more of. If you support the DoW, DHS, IC, or any federal mission that touches cyber, spectrum, AI, training, sensors, or modernization… ...make the time to read this issue.     You need to know where you are before you can figure out where you're going. The Canadian Army | ArmĆ©e canadienne has just released Inflection Point 2025: Modernization of the Canadian Army—a bold, comprehensive roadmap that acknowledges the Army we have is not the Army we need. That's a big call from the Commander and his team. Let's look at this call to action: From a digital technology perspective, this modernization plan is pivotal: #Digital Transformation - The Army is evolving into a data-driven force, integrating AI, machine learning, autonomous systems, and cloud computing to accelerate decision-making and operational effectiveness. #C5ISRT Interoperability - Seamless integration across Command, Control, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Targeting systems will ensure real-time coordination with NATO, joint forces, and government partners. #AI-Enabled Targeting & Predictive Sustainment - The Army is embracing automation and predictive modeling to enhance lethality and resilience, while reducing reliance on outdated and vulnerable processes. Pan-Domain Kill Webs -Moving beyond linear kill chains, the Army is building dynamic, multi-domain targeting networks to deliver decisive military edge. Digital Culture & Leadership -Success will depend not just on systems, but on leaders who foster a culture of innovation, agility, and adaptation. Build it on a shared hunger for excellence, fitness and resilience. Restructuring & Reorganization -This is an ambitious undertaking. The Army is rethinking its structure to better align with modern threats and technologies— addressing long evident gaps at the Div and Bde levels, integrating new capabilities, and ensuring agility across all domains in Major Combat Operations. It’s a foundational shift that will shape how the Army trains, equips, sustains and operates the deployed force for decades to come. And this will take a lot more effort than the production of a new org chart. This is a generational shift. The Canadian Army has a lot of ground to retake in difficult circumstances. Let’s celebrate this vision—and support its execution. The public and industry partners need to lean in to support our Army.   • The Army Takes Another Look at AI-assisted Combat Mission Command Tools The US #Army announced the #SBIR topic "A254-005: Automated Course of Action Generation", https://lnkd.in/dvAhhfTT The announcement is insightful, and hints at possible characteristics of #battle #command in #future #wars. It envisions what I would call an #AI-based #Assistant actively supporting the commander and staff in #Course of Action generation, #MDMP, and continuing #replanning as a #combat #mission is executed. In my opinion, responders to this topic are likely considering some of the following: * Enable the #commander and #staff to explain to the Assistant the intent and the concept of the mission rapidly, naturally and accurately. * Ensure that the Assistant can rapidly and effectively obtain and fuse voluminous yet imperfect, rapidly changing and often contradictory and deceptive information about the #terrain, enemy and friendly #troops. * Overcome widely reported, serious limitations of #LLM tools (if proposed) in planning tasks, while mindful of diverse arms, multiple domains and varied supporting efforts. * Generate complete and accurate products -- textual and graphics -- associated with command processes. Crucially, these products must be consistent with (but not hobbled by) #friendly and #enemy #TTPs and #SOPs. * Provide for fast, convenient editing and regeneration of the products by human staff. * Allow the commander and staff to check, #validate and #evaluate the accuracy and efficacy of the products without laborious detailed review. * Find the ways to do all of the above in distributed, asynchronous manner where members of the staff are mobile, distributed and operate with austere, intermittent #communications.
