AI is rapidly moving from passive text generators to active decision-makers. To understand where things are headed, it’s important to trace the stages of this evolution. 1. 𝗟𝗟𝗠𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗿𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT-3 and GPT-4 excel at generating human-like text by predicting the next word in a sequence. They can produce coherent and contextually appropriate responses—but their capabilities end there. They don’t retain memory, they don’t take actions, and they don’t understand goals. They are reactive, not proactive. 2. 𝗥𝗔𝗚: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁-𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) brought a major upgrade by integrating LLMs with external knowledge sources like vector databases or document stores. Now the model could retrieve relevant context and generate more accurate and personalized responses based on that information. This stage introduced the idea of 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀, but still required orchestration. The system didn’t plan or act—it responded with more relevance. 3. 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗜: 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 Agentic AI is a fundamentally different paradigm. Here, systems are built to perceive, reason, and act toward goals—often without constant human prompting. An Agentic system includes: • 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆: to retain and recall information over time. • 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: to decide what actions to take and in what order. • 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗨𝘀𝗲: to interact with APIs, databases, code, or software systems. • 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆: to loop through perception, decision, and action—iteratively improving performance. Instead of a single model generating content, we now orchestrate 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, each responsible for specific tasks, coordinated by a central controller or planner. This is the architecture behind emerging use cases like autonomous coding assistants, intelligent workflow bots, and AI co-pilots that can operate entire systems. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 We’re no longer designing prompts. We’re designing 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿, 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 capable of interacting with the real world. This evolution—LLM → RAG → Agentic AI—marks the transition from 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 to 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

AI is becoming a make-or-break factor for banks. But success will not depend on their ability to offer #AI, but on their competence in integrating it. Let’s take a look. Banking is forecasted to feel the biggest impact from generative AI among sectors and industries as a percentage of their revenues with the additional value calculated between $200 bn and $340 bn annually (source: McKinsey). But why is the impact so powerful? One of the main reasons is because the abrupt surge of gen AI is exponentially increasing the speed with which #banking is being transformed. That is not to say that the transformation has started with or due to AI. On the contrary: during the past 10 to 15 years banking was already in the middle of transforming from a human-based, relationship-first industry to a more automated and technology-driven business following the #fintech revolution and the ascend of nimbler and more innovative competitors. But AI now does 2 things: — It brings the transition to a new level, across 3 dimensions: speed, outcome and impact. — It turbo-charges one of the biggest challenges in modern FS: the combination of AI and data that brings under the same roof two inherently opposing forces: mass and customization. In other words, AI seems to find a credible answer to achieving hyper-personalization. In a recent report Deloitte has provided realistic examples on how this is done across both cost efficiency and income growth: Cost efficiency: — Workforce acceleration efficiencies across the board: 0–15% of total staff cost — IT development and maintenance acceleration: 10–20% of IT staff cost — Improved credit-risk assessment leading to 10-15% savings in impairment charges — Improved FinCrime/fraud detection reducing litigation/redress charges and fraud losses Income growth: — Next generation market analysis / predictive trading algorithms: 5–7% uplift on trading income — Improved customer retention: 1–2% uplift on fees & commissions — Improved customer acquisition through hyper-personalised marketing: 5-10% uplift from interest income and fees & commissions — Tailored loan pricing based on credit risk assessment: 2–3% increase on net interest income Despite all the excitement around these estimated benefits, success will not be a walk in the park. It will depend on the banks’ ability to integrate AI in a seamless way into their day-to-day operations. Going forward AI will be re-writing much of the scenarios and use cases of the banking value chain. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they will all be different, but most will certainly be enhanced with impact spanning both across the back-end and the front-end. Given that resources are limited, one of the main challenges will be how to identify the ones to focus on. Factors such as #strategy, potential impact and a match with the existing skillset should be guiding the selection process. Opinions: my own, Graphic source and use cases: Deloitte

AI is changing lives far beyond chatbots and data centers. What do you think about this the most inspiring examples? Helping children hear the world more clearly. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.5 billion people globally live with some degree of hearing loss, and tens of millions are children. Without early intervention, hearing challenges can impact language development, academic performance, social interaction, and future career opportunities. Today, AI-powered hearing technologies are rewriting that story. 🔹 AI can distinguish speech from background noise in real time. 🔹 Advanced hearing devices can automatically adapt to classrooms, playgrounds, restaurants, and busy public spaces. 🔹 Machine learning algorithms continuously optimize hearing profiles based on individual listening patterns. 🔹 Edge AI enables many of these decisions to happen instantly on-device, reducing latency and improving the user experience. 🔹 Connected ecosystems allow hearing devices to integrate with smartphones, streaming services, and educational tools. For a child sitting in a noisy classroom, this isn't just a technology upgrade. It's the difference between hearing a teacher's instructions clearly or missing a critical part of the lesson. It's the difference between participating in conversations or feeling isolated. And this is just the beginning. As AI models become more sophisticated and power-efficient, we will see hearing devices evolve from simple amplification tools into intelligent personal assistants that understand context, prioritize important sounds, translate languages, and provide personalized support throughout the day. While much of the AI conversation focuses on trillion-parameter models, GPUs, and data centers, some of the most meaningful innovations are happening at the human level—helping children learn, communicate, and reach their full potential. The true measure of technology isn't how powerful it becomes. It's how many lives it improves. ❤️ This is AI at its best. #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Healthcare #DigitalHealth #HearingTechnology #EdgeAI #MachineLearning #Innovation #TechForGood #Accessibility #FutureOfAI #Education #HealthTech #HumanCenteredAI #Technology

🚨 AI JUST HIT ROCHE’S EARNINGS CALL 🚨 Roche’s Q3 2025 earnings call quietly revealed something bigger than a quarterly update — it showed where diagnostics is heading. They announced the Kidney Klinrisk Algorithm — an AI-driven risk stratification tool that just received its CE mark in Europe. This isn’t just a new test. It’s the start of a new category of diagnostics — where routine lab results, imaging, and patient data combine to predict risk before symptoms even appear. “By combining AI with routine tests, Roche helps physicians identify patients at risk of kidney function decline early on, enabling more informed and confident decision-making.” 💡 The signal beneath the noise: ✅ AI + Multi-Modal Data — Fusing clinical, biomarker, imaging, and real-world evidence to find patterns humans can’t see. ✅ Biomarker-Driven Precision — Identifying patient subgroups that respond differently, turning reactive testing into proactive insight. ✅ Data Governance & Traceability — Building regulated, audit-ready data environments to support CE-marked and FDA-cleared algorithms. ✅ Speed to Insight — Automating model development pipelines so clinicians don’t wait months for answers that data could reveal in days. For an industry where Diagnostics has been the slowest to digitize, this marks a real inflection point: from test results ➜ to algorithms ➜ to earlier, smarter interventions. Roche may have lit the spark — but the opportunity runs across the entire ecosystem. The companies who can unify multi-omics, imaging, and clinical data under a compliant, AI-ready framework will define the next era of precision medicine.

🔮 Design Patterns For AI Interfaces (https://lnkd.in/dyyMKuU9), a practical overview with emerging AI UI patterns, layout considerations and real-life examples — along with interaction patterns and limitations. Neatly put together by Sharang Sharma. One of the major shifts is the move away from traditional “chat-alike” AI interfaces. As Luke Wroblewski wrote, when agents can use multiple tools, call other agents and run in the background, users orchestrate AI work — there’s a lot less chatting back and forth. In fact, chatbot widgets are rarely an experience paradigm that people truly enjoy and can fall in love with. Mostly because the burden of articulating intent efficiently lies on the user. It can be done (and we’ve learned to do that), but it takes an incredible amount of time and articulation to give AI enough meaningful context for it to produce meaningful insights. As it turned out, AI is much better at generating prompt based on user’s context to then feed it into itself. So we see more task-oriented UIs, semantic spreadsheets and infinite canvases — with AI proactively asking questions with predefined options, or where AI suggests presets and templates to get started. Or where AI agents collect context autonomously, and emphasize the work, the plan, the tasks — the outcome, instead of the chat input. All of it are examples of great User-First, AI-Second experiences. Not experiences circling around AI features, but experiences that truly amplify value for users by sprinkling a bit of AI in places where it delivers real value to real users. And that’s what makes truly great products — with AI or without. ✤ Useful Design Patterns Catalogs: Shape of AI: Design Patterns, by Emily Campbell 👍 https://shapeof.ai/ AI UX Patterns, by Luke Bennis 👍 https://lnkd.in/dF9AZeKZ Design Patterns For Trust With AI, via Sarah Gold 👍 https://lnkd.in/etZ7mm2Y AI Guidebook Design Patterns, by Google https://lnkd.in/dTAHuZxh ✤ Useful resources: Usable Chat Interfaces to AI Models, by Luke Wroblewski https://lnkd.in/d-Ssb5G7 The Receding Role of AI Chat, by Luke Wroblewski https://lnkd.in/d8xcujMC Agent Management Interface Patterns, by Luke Wroblewski https://lnkd.in/dp2H9-HQ Designing for AI Engineers, by Eve Weinberg https://lnkd.in/dWHstucP #ux #ai #design

AI products like Cursor, Bolt and Replit are shattering growth records not because they're "AI agents". Or because they've got impossibly small teams (although that's cool to see 👀). It's because they've mastered the user experience around AI, somehow balancing pro-like capabilities with B2C-like UI. This is product-led growth on steroids. Yaakov Carno tried the most viral AI products he could get his hands on. Here are the surprising patterns he found: (Don't miss the full breakdown in today's bonus Growth Unhinged: https://lnkd.in/ehk3rUTa) 1. Their AI doesn't feel like a black box. Pro-tips from the best: - Show step-by-step visibility into AI processes - Let users ask, “Why did AI do that?” - Use visual explanations to build trust. 2. Users don’t need better AI—they need better ways to talk to it. Pro-tips from the best: - Offer pre-built prompt templates to guide users. - Provide multiple interaction modes (guided, manual, hybrid). - Let AI suggest better inputs ("enhance prompt") before executing an action. 3. The AI works with you, not just for you. Pro-tips from the best: - Design AI tools to be interactive, not just output-driven. - Provide different modes for different types of collaboration. - Let users refine and iterate on AI results easily. 4. Let users see (& edit) the outcome before it's irreversible. Pro-tips from the best: - Allow users to test AI features before full commitment (many let you use it without even creating an account). - Provide preview or undo options before executing AI changes. - Offer exploratory onboarding experiences to build trust. 5. The AI weaves into your workflow, it doesn't interrupt it. Pro-tips from the best: - Provide simple accept/reject mechanisms for AI suggestions. - Design seamless transitions between AI interactions. - Prioritize the user’s context to avoid workflow disruptions. -- The TL;DR: Having "AI" isn’t the differentiator anymore—great UX is. Pardon the Sunday interruption & hope you enjoyed this post as much as I did 🙏 #ai #genai #ux #plg

The real AI war is being fought in the deployment layer. While everyone obsesses over GPT and Claude, these platforms, which process billions of inferences daily, are quietly determining who actually wins in AI. In just 12 months, the AI deployment landscape transformed more dramatically than cloud infrastructure did in 5 years. Big one-year changes in Mosaic scores (company health and trajectory metric) across the model deployment & serving market signal a fundamental reshaping of the AI infrastructure landscape. Market leaders redefining AI deployment: → Databricks dominates with the highest Mosaic score and $100B valuation, reaching $2.6B revenue with 60%+ growth → Baseten’s rapid rise just attracted a fresh $150M in funding, driven by their serverless GPU infrastructure → Together AI capitalized on generative AI demand, raising $533.5M at a $3.3B valuation with in-house LLMs using reinforcement learning → VESSL AI and Modal are winning with pay-per-use GPU compute models Current market leaders are split into distinct camps that will likely converge or consolidate sooner than we all expect. → Infrastructure specialists like Together AI and Fireworks AI focus on serverless inference for production environments. → Platform plays like Databricks leverage their existing enterprise relationships and massive resources to both build and buy innovation. → Developer-centric players like Modal attract startups with zero fixed costs. The winners share proven technical foundations driving their success: ↳Scale: Hugging Face hosts 500,000+ models for 5 million developers ↳Architecture: Serverless infra eliminates DevOps complexity (Baseten, Modal, Fireworks) ↳Business Model: Pay-per-use pricing removes barriers for growing startups ↳AI-Native: 80% of Databricks’ new databases are now AI-created vs. 30% last year ↳Generative AI Focus: Together AI and Fireworks built specifically for LLM inference demands Critically, these platforms combine efficient compute, intelligent orchestration, and developer-friendly abstractions – creating defensible moats against hyperscaler competition. In turn, this makes these companies prime acquisition targets for the established cloud leaders. With 96% of enterprises deploying AI models (up from 25% in 2023), infrastructure choice has become strategic. Massive YoY revenue growth numbers across both the hyperscalers and emerging players demonstrate the market's trajectory. While the world debates which LLM is smartest, the companies controlling how those models actually reach users are building the real moats. Incredible recent funding rounds and major acquisitions (Nvidia acquiring OctoAI) will define which platforms become the become dominant AI infrastructure players. P.S. Big breakthrough: A few months my lab at MIT introduced SPARKS, our autonomous scientific discovery model. Since then we have demonstrated applicability to broad problem spaces across domains from proteins, bio-inspired materials to inorganic materials. SPARKS learns by doing, thinks by critiquing itself & creates knowledge through recursive interaction; not just with data, but with the physical & logical consequences of its own ideas. It closes the entire scientific loop - hypothesis generation, data retrieval, coding, simulation, critique, refinement, & detailed manuscript drafting - without prompts, manual tuning, or human oversight. SPARKS is fundamentally different from frontier models. While models like o3-pro and o3 deep research can produce summaries, they stop short of full discovery. SPARKS conducts the entire scientific process autonomously, generating & validating falsifiable hypotheses, interpreting results & refining its approach until a reproducible, fully validated evidence-based discovery emerges. This is the first time we've seen AI discover new science. SPARKS is orders of magnitude more capable than frontier models & even when comparing just the writing, SPARKS still outperforms: in our benchmark evaluation, it scored 1.6× higher than o3-pro and over 2.5× higher than o3 deep research - not because it writes more, but because it writes with purpose, grounded in original, validated compositional reasoning from start to finish. We benchmarked SPARKS on several case studies, where it uncovered two previously unknown protein design rules: 1⃣ Length-dependent mechanical crossover β-sheet-rich peptides outperform α-helices—but only once chains exceed ~80 amino acids. Below that, helices dominate. No prior systematic study had exposed this crossover, leaving protein designers without a quantitative rule for sizing sheet-rich materials. This discovery resolves a long-standing ambiguity in molecular design and provides a principle to guide the structural tuning of biomaterials and protein-based nanodevices based on mechanical strength. 2⃣ A stability “frustration zone” At intermediate lengths (~50- 70 residues) with balanced α/β content, peptide stability becomes highly variable. Sparks mapped this volatile region and explained its cause: competing folding nuclei and exposed edge strands that destabilize structure. This insight pinpoints a failure regime in protein design where instability arises not from randomness, but from well-defined physical constraints, giving designers new levers to avoid brittle configurations or engineer around them. This gives engineers and biologists a roadmap for avoiding stability traps in de novo design - especially when exploring hybrid motifs. Stay tuned for more updates & examples, papers and more details.
