    Some of the most powerful breakthroughs start with a surprise. An unexpected event happens. Someone recognizes its potential. And then, someone chooses to act on it. A recent article from Harvard Business Review highlights the story of LASIK eye surgery. It wasn’t developed through a carefully planned roadmap, but instead emerged when doctors discovered that a femtosecond laser caused far less damage than a scalpel. Or take the example of the rolling suitcase, created not through a boardroom brainstorm, but because someone got tired of carrying heavy equipment on a wheeled skid. When we become open to the unexpected, we open the door to innovation. But this doesn’t happen by accident; it happens when we create the conditions for curiosity to thrive. When employees are engaged and feel safe and encouraged to explore, question, and even challenge the status quo, their intrinsic motivation and commitment soar. They become more invested not just in their tasks, but in the organization's success. Leaders play a pivotal role. By inviting your teams to share their surprising observations, encouraging experimentation, and making it okay to try things that might not work, you're not just fostering innovation; you're actively cultivating an engaged workforce. When employees see their ideas welcomed, even the "failures" as learning opportunities, they feel valued and empowered. This sense of psychological safety is a cornerstone of deep engagement.     One of the clearest signals of whether a transformation is working isn’t in the plan - it’s in the conversations happening in your teams. So pay close attention to the frequency of healthy debate, constructive challenge and openness to new and divergent ideas that takes place. If the frequency is low… …there is the risk of creating the illusion of performance because people readily ‘understand’ each other, agree on everything, collaboration seems to flow smoothly and there is a collective sensation of progress. However, the opportunity cost is teams gets trapped in their own paradigms, opportunities get overlooked, risks ignored - and ultimately their output becomes derivative not innovative, performance diminishes as opposed to improving and compounding. If the frequency is high… …there is a level of psychological safety that allows for team members to be more objective, to speak up with relevant ideas, to constructively challenge each other, and bring their diverse perspectives and experiences to the table - in the knowledge it won’t be held against them. This opens up the opportunity of reframing the paradigm, and connecting different perspectives and ideas. Ingredients for creativity, innovation, resilience and performance. You see homogeneous teams might feel easier, but easy doesn’t translate into Performance. Here are a few ideas to experiment with your teams… 1. Intentionally foster a team environment that replaces scepticism with intellectual curiosity, an open and learning mindset.   2. Consider how you can create a ways of working that allows all ideas and perspectives from everyone in the room to be heard. 3. Encourage dissenting perspectives. Surrounding yourself with people who are willing to disagree with you and challenge your perspectives and each other. 4. Consider whether you may need to invite others to that creative or idea generation meeting to ensure you get a broader perspective. 5. De-stigmatise failure through sharing past mistakes and celebrating lessons learnt. 6. Institutionalise a team culture of healthy candour. Candour is one of the key attributes to improving the quality of output, levelling up creativity and enabling effective collaboration.     Far too often, I see leaders and companies move on from innovation, believing it's only necessary during the startup phase. In reality, it's what keeps companies alive and thriving. As companies grow, it's easy to fall into routine and let creativity fade. But innovation must continue-even as you scale. An older HBR article I came across this morning highlights how breakthroughs in management can create lasting advantages that are hard to replicate. Companies focused only on new products or efficiency often get quickly copied. To stay ahead, businesses must become "serial management innovators," always seeking new ways to transform how they operate. This idea remains as relevant now as it was back then. The benefits of sustained innovation are undeniable: •Competitive Edge •Increased Revenue •Customer Satisfaction •Attracting Talent •Organizational Growth and Employee Retention Embrace the innovation lifecycle-adapting creativity as your organization matures. Sustaining creativity means creating an environment where people feel safe to push boundaries. Encourage your teams to think big, take risks, and use the experience of your organization. Here are three strategies that I’ve seen work firsthand: Make Experimentation a Priority: Mistakes are part of the process—they help us learn, grow, and innovate. As leaders, share your own experiences with risk-taking, talk about what you've learned, and celebrate those who take bold steps, even when things don’t go as planned. It sends a powerful message: it's okay to take risks. Promote Intrapreneurship: Many of the best ideas come from those closest to the work. Encourage your people to think like entrepreneurs. Give them ownership, the tools they need, and the freedom to explore. Whether it’s through ‘innovation sprints’ or dedicated time for passion projects, showing your team that their creativity matters sustains momentum. Address big challenges, ask tough questions, and let your people feel empowered to tackle them head-on. Break Down Silos: True innovation happens when people connect across departments. Create opportunities for cross-functional interactions-through gatherings, open forums, or spontaneous connections. Diverse perspectives lead to game-changing solutions, and breaking down silos opens the door to that kind of synergy. Innovation doesn’t happen by accident.     When SMEs hear the word "innovation," they often picture tech giants pouring millions into R&D labs. Because of this, many smaller enterprises relegate innovation to the "nice-to-have" pile,waiting for a stroke of luck or a quiet quarter that never comes. But in an SME ecosystem, innovation isn't a luxury; it’s a survival muscle. And it doesn't require massive capital—it requires an intentional operational structure. If you want to move from accidental innovation to a repeatable growth engine, what does "what's next" actually look like? Here are a few progressive levers SMEs can explore right now: 💡 1. The Internal 'Intrapreneur' Taskforce Instead of hiring expensive external design agencies, look inward. Assemble a lean, cross-functional taskforce of high-potential employees from different departments. Give them a clear mandate: spend 10% of their week focusing exclusively on identifying adjacent market verticals or unaddressed customer pain points to build net-new business revenue. This gives your team extreme ownership while protecting your core business operations. 🔧 2. Micro-Experimentation Budgets De-risk the fear of failure. Establish a "micro-fund" where teams can pitch small-scale, low-cost experiments (e.g., testing a GenAI tool to automate a workflow, or launching a landing page to test a new service concept). If it fails, you lose a week and a tiny budget. If it succeeds, you validate a new capability. 🔄 3. Work Decomposition to Free Up "Thinking Time" The biggest blocker to innovation in SMEs is operational burnout. People are too busy fighting daily fires to think strategically. By decomposing roles—removing administrative friction through basic automation or job redesign—you give your brightest minds the cognitive capacity to actually look ahead. Innovation isn't about inventing the next smartphone. For an SME, it’s about creating a structured, high-agency environment where your people are empowered to spot friction, build new revenue streams, and pivot before the market forces them to.     Over the years, I've discovered the truth: Game-changing products won't succeed unless they have a unified vision across sales, marketing, and product teams. When these key functions pull in different directions, it's a death knell for go-to-market execution. Without alignment on positioning and buyer messaging, we fail to communicate value and create disjointed experiences. So, how do I foster collaboration across these functions? 1) Set shared goals and incentivize unity towards that North Star metric, be it revenue, activations, or retention. 2) Encourage team members to work closely together, building empathy rather than skepticism of other groups' intentions and contributions. 3) Regularly conduct cross-functional roadmapping sessions to cascade priorities across departments and highlight dependencies. 4) Create an environment where teams can constructively debate assumptions and strategies without politics or blame. 5) Provide clarity for sales on target personas and value propositions to equip them for deal conversations. 6) Involve all functions early in establishing positioning and messaging frameworks. Co-create when possible. By rallying together around customers’ needs, we block and tackle as one team towards product-market fit. The magic truly happens when teams unite towards a shared mission to delight users!

    Are we realising the potential of our networks to make change happen? Most innovation emerges from collaborative projects where teams openly “borrow” & adapt each other’s (often small but powerful) ideas. Many networks & communities of practice could achieve so much more by experimenting together around collective priorities to generate & share new solutions. This is beyond spreading known “best” or “good” practices. It is about innovating to design new solutions collectively. So I appreciated this piece from Ed Morrison about three different kinds of networks: - Advocacy networks are communities that seek to mobilise people, creating pressure to shift policies, priorities or messages in a particular direction. Their aim is to connect & influence rather than to change how they themselves work. - Learning networks are communities of practice. They share knowledge, compare practice & build shared capability. Learning networks often excel at spread & improvement of existing practice, but only sometimes move into structured innovation work. - Innovating (or transforming) networks are communities that combine their assets - ideas, relationships, data, capabilities - to create new value that none could produce alone. They manage collaboration as a process of experimentation: agreeing a shared outcome, running multiple connected tests of change, learning by doing & amplifying what works across the network. https://lnkd.in/edbbexiG. Every learning network has the potential to become an innovating/transforming network. Some actions to enable this: 1. Build a foundation of strong, trusting relationships within the network, understanding each member’s starting point & motivation for change 2. Focus on helping each other to succeed; listen to each others’ stories & plans, co-coach, give advice to each other & build shared inquiry 3. Move from “sharing” or “raising awareness” to some concrete outcomes the network want to change together through collective experimentation 4. Agree some simple norms for the network so that members help each other to make progress, make it safe to try things, fail fast & share incomplete work 5. Encourage multiple, parallel tests of change around similar outcome so projects can “steal with pride” from one another & quickly refine promising ideas 6. Put simple routines in place for noticing patterns (what is shifting where & why), capturing these insights & amplifying them across the network 7.     I am pleased to share the publication of “Implementing clinical needs into the development of wearable health-monitoring technology” in Nature Nanotechnology (Nature Portfolio), led by Noe Brasier. It was a privilege to contribute as a co-author alongside Noé, Anja Domenghino, Christoph A. Meier, Steve Xu, and John Rogers. The article highlights the importance of embedding clinical needs and feedback throughout the development of wearable health technologies. It argues that true innovation in this field depends not only on technical excellence but also on a deep understanding of clinical workflows, patient realities, and system-level incentives. Under Noé’s thoughtful leadership, the paper proposes a structured framework for integrating clinician insights, from early problem identification to prototype refinement, so that wearable devices can achieve both clinical relevance and real-world adoption. As digital health continues to evolve, this type of transdisciplinary approach will be key to translating promising technology into meaningful improvements in care and patient outcomes.     Atomically thin semiconductors driving smart sensors with real-world impact Focusing on atomically thin semiconductors at RMIT University, we are creating the next generation of ultra-sensitive sensors and smart systems. They are smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient than ever before. Our innovation begins at the atomic scale. My colleagues and I are engineering two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors such as graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides, and transition-metal oxides - materials only a few atoms thick yet possessing extraordinary electrical and optical tunability. These quantum-thin layers exhibit exceptional charge-carrier mobility, excitonic behaviour, and mechanical flexibility, unlocking new frontiers in wearable sensors, ultra-fast optoelectronics, and bio-integrated devices. I’m lucky to work in world-class research facilities, which serve as the backbone of innovation, enabling interdisciplinary collaboration across scales, and alongside several national research centres, including the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS) . These hubs help connect my research to a global network of experts in photonics, quantum materials, and low-energy electronics. What truly distinguishes our approach is the ability to translate atomic-scale discoveries into intelligent, connected systems. Atomically thin semiconductor devices are being integrated into Internet of Things platforms, wireless communication modules, and AI-assisted signal processors, creating systems that not only sense but also interpret and respond. These platforms enable real-time environmental monitoring, such as detecting trace gases and pollutants, as well as advanced biomedical diagnostics, where bio-field-effect transistors (bio-FETs) and photonic biosensors can identify disease biomarkers at early stages. In the energy and mobility sectors, high-mobility 2D semiconductors are driving low-power electronics and adaptive control systems for sustainable technologies. RMIT’s multidisciplinary engineering ecosystem ensures each layer, from material design to data analytics, contributes to intelligent functionality. A notable example of this multi-layered ecosystem at work is the world-first ingestible gas-sensing capsule, now commercialised by Atmo Biosciences. Incorporating nanoscale sensors, a smart processor, and a wireless transmission module, the capsule measures intestinal gases in vivo and transmits real-time data to reveal insights into gut health. It exemplifies how nanomaterial-enabled sensors can evolve into life-changing medical technologies. By uniting atomically thin materials, smart system integration, and global collaboration, my colleagues and I continue to lead in Electrical and Electronic Engineering research.     A designer’s role in multidisciplinary creative collaboration In the world of product development, the most innovative solutions often result from intense collaboration across diverse perspectives Diversity comes in many flavors… cultural, gender, specialties, disciplines, skillsets and more Let’s talk about the designer's role in a multidisciplinary setting As designers, we're more than just creators We’re the translators, mediators, and catalysts that bring different perspectives together to shape meaningful products and experiences When we worked on the John Deere 1R electric tractor at BMW Designworks, our core team consisted of designers, engineers, product marketers, and model makers We were a small but accomplished group of around six people, united by one common goal… to design, engineer, and convert a 1R combustion tractor into a drivable 1R electric tractor Looking back, my roles as the creative director and lead designer wasn’t just about designing and building the tractor… it became a lot more than that… _Translator... Acting as the bridge between engineering, marketing, and business strategy, turning complex ideas into tangible, user-centric solutions. Clear communication was crucial to ensure everyone understood the project's vision and goals… and stay on track _Holistic Problem Solver... Integrating insights from various disciplines allowed us to approach problems from multiple angles in real time. It's about finding solutions that are both innovative and feasible, balancing creativity with practicality _Rapid Prototyping & Iteration... True innovation requires rapid iteration with input from all corners. By involving designers, engineers, and model makers in the prototyping phase, we could address real-world constraints while keeping the user experience front and center _Aligning a Shared Vision... Design isn't just about aesthetics… it's about empathy. By aligning with other disciplines on a user-centric goal, we ensured every aspect of the product resonated with the people it was designed for _Mediating Ideas and Realities... Navigating the delicate balance between bold ideas and practical limitations was key. We had limited time, and our role was to champion creativity while mediating conflicts, ensuring the final product was both innovative, viable and on time _Championing Innovation Together... Collaboration is about co-creation. By combining diverse expertise, we were able to push boundaries, generate breakthrough ideas, and build products that truly stood out _Building a Collaborative Culture... Great design emerges when we acknowledge and celebrate diverse contributions. It’s about fostering a collaborative culture where every voice is heard and every idea is valued The magic happens when we bring together minds from different disciplines to create something that none of us could have achieved alone.
