    🚇London, alive in 3D🏙️ Over the past few weeks, Adam Stanley and I have been building a digital twin of London's transport systems using ArcGIS Velocity and the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript. What started as an idea for a live 3D tube network grew into “how many different live feeds can we bring in?" We layered near real-time underground tube locations, buses, air quality sensors, traffic, bike stations, live cameras, and 3D buildings - all topped off with photorealistic tiles. The result... a living, moving 3D map of London. A 3D digital twin isn’t just a pretty map. It shows how datasets interact in one place - where hold-ups occur in a transport network, how congestion could affect air quality, and provides a live window into the city to investigate events as they unfold. Here’s how we made it: ArcGIS Maps SDK for Javascript → ran the calculations to approximately position tubes from arrival / departure data, and brought everything together into a 3D scene with custom visuals. ArcGIS Velocity → processed the different live data feeds, and output them as stream layers. Live datasets → trains, buses, bikes, traffic air quality, cameras. That last point is what makes this exciting. The data is already out there - the challenge is having the right tools to bring it together.     Is your city's "digital twin" just a glorified 3D map? 😬 A lot of municipalities think they have a DT when what they really have is a static model. It looks (maybe) impressive, but it definitely can't tell you what's happening right now. Let's break down the evolution... Stage 1: The Blueprint (#BIM) 🏗️ This is Building Information Modeling. It's a detailed 3D model of a single asset, like a new office tower or a bridge. ▶️How it works: Manual data entry. ▶️The problem: It's a static "digital presentation." It doesn't talk to the world around it. It's an island. Useful for construction, but not for running a dynamic city. Stage 2: The Snapshot (#CIM) 🏙️ This is City Information Modeling. We zoom out from one building to a whole district or city. It pulls in data from GIS and some sensors. ▶️How it works: Periodic data updates. ▶️The problem: It's a "digital replica," but it's not live. It shows you what traffic was like yesterday, or air quality last week. It's a rear-view mirror. Better for urban planning, but you're still making decisions based on old information. Every city is stuck here. Stage 3: The Living Model (True Digital Twin) 🧠 This is the game-changer. It's not just a model. It's a digital copy of your city. ▶️How it works: Real-time data exchange is enabled. Live streams from traffic sensors, energy grids, air quality monitors are connected. ▶️The Power: You can see what's happening, as it happens. More importantly, you can simulate the future. "What happens if we close this street for a festival?" "How would a new metro line impact traffic flow and air quality?" "Where are the energy usage spikes during a heatwave?" You get answers in minutes. You move from being reactive to proactive. Why does this matter? A true DT is not just an IT project. It is a major change in how we manage cities.     Had I been asked for my perspective on the role of data centers in community development, I would stress that balanced, long-term planning is not just essential - it's imperative. As technology advances at an unprecedented pace, the need to strategically position our communities to seize the incredible opportunities of the 4th industrial revolution has never been more critical. The next decade will be defined by those who can harness this momentum, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that our communities are ready to thrive in this new era. Data Centres and Mission Critical Operations Centres are a vital part of the infrastructure that powers our digital lives, enabling everything from university research to real-time healthcare. However, they are just one piece of the broader puzzle that makes communities like Macquarie Park thrive. Communities are complex ecosystems where housing, commercial property, universities, shopping centers, transportation networks, hospitals, and digital infrastructure all play interconnected roles. To suggest that data centers alone could hinder development is a lazy oversimplification of communality planning. The reality is that these facilities complement a multiplicity of industries, creating high-quality jobs, supporting local economies, and enabling the digital services that residents and businesses rely on daily. We are committed to ensuring our data centers enhance, not detract from, the communities they serve. This means working closely with stakeholders to integrate our operations with the broader infrastructure - power, water, networks, roads, and rail - that supports sustainable economic growth. We also recognize the future demands of AI and advanced technologies, which will require even more sophisticated and sustainable solutions, like liquid cooling. Ultimately, thriving communities are built on collaboration and thoughtful integration of all sectors.     Neighborhood Knowledge Is Development Intelligence One of the biggest gaps in real estate development is not financing, zoning, or political will. Sometimes it is who gets invited into the room before the deal is already shaped. In many neighborhoods, especially historically Black neighborhoods, the people who understand the place best are rarely asked to help define what should happen there. They know which businesses anchored the corridor before investors noticed it. They know which buildings carry history, where people feel safe, and which families have held the block together for decades. Yet by the time they are asked for input, the site has been selected, the concept designed, the capital stack imagined, and the renderings polished. Then we call it community engagement. But that is often review, not engagement. Review asks people to react. Real engagement lets them shape the outcome. This is one reason many communities are skeptical of development. It is not because they oppose change. It is because they have watched change happen around them and sometimes to them without meaningful involvement. Too often, neighborhoods are understood through market studies, parcel maps, rent comps, and demographic trends while lived experience is treated as secondary. But neighborhood knowledge is not soft information. It is intelligence. It reveals what market data misses: trust, design cues, pride, and pain. If we want stronger projects, that knowledge must shape the deal from the beginning. That does not mean every project can become everything everyone wants. Development still involves budgets, financing realities, timelines, and tradeoffs. But those constraints make early community involvement even more important. When local knowledge meets technical expertise, projects become more grounded and less performative. This matters most in affordable housing, corridor redevelopment, small-scale projects, and historically disinvested neighborhoods. Because in those places, development is never just about a building. It is about trust, memory, belonging, and who benefits from investment. Those questions cannot be answered only by the people underwriting the deal. They must also be answered by the elders, small business owners, church leaders, renters, homeowners, young people, and community organizers who understand the neighborhood beyond its highest and best use. They may not speak development language, but they understand value, history, and what is worth protecting. The future of development cannot be more community meetings after key decisions have already been made. We need more community-shaped deals, more local ownership, and more neighborhood intelligence at the earliest stages. The people who know the neighborhood best should not be treated as an audience for the deal. They should help shape it. Policy creates permission. Delivery creates belief. Trust comes when people help shape the outcome.

    The Power of XYZ and time - Mapping for better Decisions

    How can urban heat be made visible, and, more importantly, how can cities act on it? In my previous post, I discussed how geospatial data can be used to identify urban heat islands and support climate adaptation strategies. A great example is the Climate Compass of the City of Klagenfurt, which is part of the city's Digital Twin initiative. The Climate Compass visualizes how heat and climate-related factors are distributed across the city and provides valuable insights for planners, decision-makers and citizens alike. The solution is built on high-resolution geospatial data and a detailed 3D city model. These datasets are enriched with land cover information and historical weather data. Within the Heat Island Potential (HIP) analysis, multiple factors are combined to identify areas that are particularly prone to developing urban heat island effects. Importantly, the HIP Index does not directly measure temperature; instead, it describes the potential of a location to accumulate and retain heat. This makes it possible to identify 🌳 where vegetation already provides cooling benefits, 🏙️ which areas are highly affected by sealed surfaces, 🌬️ where ventilation corridors support natural cooling, ☀️ and how solar exposure and shading influence outdoor comfort. What I find particularly valuable is the transition from analysis to action. Instead of simply highlighting hotspots on a map, the results can be used to prioritize concrete adaptation measures such as urban greening, unsealing surfaces, improving shading or protecting ventilation corridors. This is where the real value of a Digital Twin becomes apparent. The Climate Compass demonstrates how geodata, GeoAI and Digital Twins can transform complex climate dynamics into understandable and actionable information, supporting evidence-based decisions for more resilient and livable cities.     What does #grassroots community engagement mean to me? To me, this form of community engagement is about bridging practical action with long-term impact. Grassroots aligned work centers the lived experiences and knowledge of those most affected by systemic challenges, ensuring solutions are both relevant and sustainable. Without authentic involvement, top-down solutions risk and are quite often disconnected, perpetuating inequities rather than addressing them at their core. These grassroots centered solutions are about constructing systems that not only empower individuals to take action but also position them as integral players in driving broader societal transformations. Particularly in rural and historically divested regions, grassroots agricultural initiatives provide a critical intersection between practical innovation and environmental justice. These initiatives go beyond improving farming practices(and planting 🐘 🧄!)- they directly address systemic inequities by offering pathways to environmental resilience and economic self-sufficiency for communities often purposefully and unintentionally excluded from traditional forms of policy dialogues and workforce inclusion. The composition of a nation’s workforce is a direct reflection of societal priorities. A workforce centered on sustainable energy, efficiency, #Justice40, and inclusive economic opportunities signifies a deliberate investment in #futureforward thinking. The creation of green jobs is not merely an economic strategy, it is a technical and operational necessity for addressing pressing global challenges. When local expertise is cultivated and empowered through initiatives focused on clean energy or agricultural resilience, these communities are not just participants—they are and have been leaders in a systemic shift toward sustainability. However, this shift has also expanded the attack surface for cybercriminals, posing serious threats to safety, national security, and economic stability. With cyberattacks on critical infrastructure rising worldwide, India needs proactively secure its transportation sector. A breach in railway control systems, airport networks, or traffic management could cause mass disruptions, financial losses, and compromised national security. Case Study: Cyber Attack on Indian Railways’ Ticketing System In 2022, a breach in Indian Railways exposed sensitive passenger data of over 30 million users. Hackers infiltrated the IRCTC database, extracting personal details and payment information, highlighting the need for advanced encryption and authentication. Cyberattacks on public transport have a domino effect: Disruptions in Supply Chains: Freight transport breaches can delay essential goods, affecting healthcare, agriculture, and manufacturing. Financial Losses: A breach in Delhi Metro or Mumbai suburban rail network could result in losses exceeding $100 million due to ticketing fraud, data theft, and service disruptions. National Security Risks: Transportation is crucial for military and emergency services. A cyberattack on railway control systems could have catastrophic consequences during geopolitical tensions. India’s Steps Towards Strengthening Cybersecurity in Transport. India has initiated several measures to enhance cybersecurity. National Cyber Security Policy 2020: Strengthens defense mechanisms for critical infrastructure, including transport. Cyber Swachhta Kendra: Monitors and neutralizes cyber threats in public infrastructure. CERT-In Guidelines for Transport Cybersecurity: Directives for metros, airlines, and logistics providers to enhance cybersecurity frameworks. Global Cybersecurity Collaborations: Indian Railways and major metro corporations partner with international agencies to secure digital systems. The future of smart mobility—electric buses, bullet trains, and AI-driven metro systems—depends on robust cybersecurity frameworks. Government initiatives like Digital India and Make in India needs to integrate cybersecurity-first approaches in transport planning to prevent disruptions.
