    Not all soft skills training is created equal. A few months ago, I was working with a group of managers from a large manufacturing company. They had been through plenty of training programs before- the kind where you take notes and then go right back to doing things the old way. When I walked into the room, I could see it in their faces: Let’s see if this is any different. So instead of starting with slides or theory, I took them straight into a live simulation: - A crisis scenario that could actually happen in their business. - Conflicting priorities, tough personalities, and limited time to decide. - Every move they made in real time had visible consequences. To begin with, I saw a lot of resistance in experimentation, voices which were not too loud and over powering were ignored leading to loss of critical information- the room was tense. People hesitated. Some stuck to their usual patterns. But as it got deeper, they started communicating much more effectively, this led to them collaborating, noticing blind spots, and eventually testing new ways to lead. By the end, they weren’t asking- Will this work? They said that they wanted to cascade it to their teams. Weeks later, I got an email from one of the managers. He told me he used the exact process from our simulation to navigate a real customer crisis and not only avoided a major fallout, but actually strengthened the client relationship through this crisis. That’s the difference between training that’s forgotten by the time you’re back at your desk, and training that rewires how you think, act, and lead. The secret? Immersion. When participants practice real scenarios, solve actual challenges, and see the impact of their decisions in the room, learning sticks.     Scrum Variations: Deviate to Innovate The Scrum Guide is clear: if you modify, misapply, or omit any element, you’re not practicing Scrum anymore. But as teams mature, they often wonder what they can change. Many add complementary practices, like planning poker, story points, velocity, team boards, pair programming, TDD, etc. These practices enhance Scrum without altering it. But what happens when you fundamentally change Scrum? Once you change the central elements, you may still be an Agile Team, but you're not a Scrum Team. And that's ok. Sometimes, intentional deviations from the framework can lead to meaningful innovation. The key is to respect the principles of transparency, inspection, adaptation, collaboration, and value-orientation. It’s less about abandoning the rules and more about evolving the practices to fit your team’s needs. Just a Few Ideas... Variable Sprint Lengths Scrum’s sprint cadence comes at the expense of flexibility. Shorter sprints might work well for research-heavy tasks, while longer sprints may be better suited for delivery-focused goals. The key is sticking to regular inspection and adaptation, even if the timebox changes. On-Demand Retros Why wait until the sprint ends to improve? If an issue arises, hold a quick retro to address it. Or, maintain a backlog of improvement ideas and trigger a retro when it reaches a certain size. This keeps adaptation timely without constant interruptions. Rotating Scrum Master Rotating the SM accountability among team members fosters empathy and shared ownership. This approach lets everyone experience the SM challenges and responsibilities. Maybe rename to "Team Coach." Incremental Sprint Reviews Why showcase everything at the end of the sprint? Hold mini-sessions throughout. You can share high-priority increments as soon as they're completed. Earlier stakeholder feedback helps the team adapt faster. Hybrid Sprint Planning Sprint Planning can be exhausting. Split it into two parts: one session for the Sprint Goal, another for the development plan. The second session could even be asynchronous, letting team members prepare individually. Keep collaboration high while reducing meeting fatigue. Cross-Team Sprint Planning When multiple teams work toward shared goals or burn a common backlog, joint Sprint Planning can improve alignment and reduce dependencies. Teams maintain autonomy but collaborate early to avoid surprises later. Skipping the Daily Scrum The Daily Scrum is helpful, but some days it adds no value. Let the team skip it when there are no plan updates or impediments. This respects their time and focuses attention on meaningful work. Innovate With Purpose Altering Scrum isn’t a decision to take lightly. The framework exists for a reason: it works. But thoughtful experimentation can lead to improvements. So, ideate, experiment, measure, reflect, and iterate. Apply Scrum’s principles to Scrum itself, honoring its values but evolving its practices.

    Most people think the lesson starts when the teacher begins to talk. It doesn't. It starts the moment curiosity walks into the room. A learner stood before a simple cardboard display. On one side, Conductors. On the other, Insulators. Then came the real magic. Instead of asking students to memorize definitions, he connected a battery, a bulb, a buzzer, and wires. One by one, different materials were tested. Aluminum. A safety pin. A screw. Plastic. Wood. Paper. An eraser. A pencil. The bulb either lit up or stayed dark. No long lecture. No pressure to cram. Just discovery. In that moment, science stopped being a chapter in a textbook. It became an experience. And experiences stay longer than explanations. This is the kind of learning Africa needs more of. Learning that invites questions instead of silence. Learning that encourages learners to predict before they are told the answer. Learning that replaces "Because the teacher said so" with "I saw it happen." When students touch, test, observe, fail, laugh, and try again, they are not only learning science. They are building curiosity, confidence, critical thinking, and problem solving. The future will not reward those who only remember facts.     💡Combining Design Thinking, Lean UX, and Agile A combination of Design Thinking, Lean UX, and Agile methodologies offers a powerful approach to product development—it helps balance user-centered design with efficient concept validation and iterative product development. 1️⃣ User-centered foundation (Design Thinking): Begin by understanding the needs, emotions, and problems of the end-users. ✔ Start by conducting user research to identify and understand user needs. ✔ Gather insights through direct interaction with users (e.g., through interviews, surveys, etc.). Spend time understanding users' behavior, focusing on "why" rather than "what" they do. ✔ After gathering research, prioritize the most critical user insights to guide your design focus. Create a 2x2 matrix to prioritize insights based on impact (high vs low business impact) and feasibility (easy vs hard to implement) ✔ Begin brainstorming potential solutions based on these prioritized insights and formulate a hypothesis. Encourage cross-functional collaboration during brainstorming sessions to generate diverse ideas. 2️⃣ Hypothesis-driven testing (Lean UX): Lean UX helps quickly validate key assumptions. It fits perfectly between Design Thinking's ideation and Agile's development processes, ensuring that critical hypothesis are validated with users before actual development started. ✔ Formulate a testable hypothesis around a potential solution that addresses the user needs uncovered in the Design Thinking phase. ✔ Conduct experiment—develop a Minimum Viable Product (https://lnkd.in/dQg_siZG) to test the hypothesis. Build just enough functionality to test your hypothesis—focus on speed and simplicity. ✔ Based on the experiment's outcome, refine or revise the hypothesis and repeat the cycle. 3️⃣ Iterative product development (Agile): Once the Lean UX process produces validated concepts, Agile takes over for incremental development. Agile's iterative sprints will help you continuously build, test, and refine the concept. Agile complements Lean UX by providing the structure for frequent releases, allowing teams to adapt and deliver value consistently. ✔ Break down work into small, manageable chunks that can be delivered iteratively. ✔ Embrace iterative development—continue refining your product through iterative build-measure-learn sprints. Keep the user feedback loop tight by involving users in sprint reviews or testing sessions. ✔ Gather user feedback after each sprint and adapt the product according to the findings.     Back in 2017, my team had a simple but powerful ritual. We held "I have a design challenge" meetings, where someone would bring a project they were working on, and we’d workshop it together. These sessions weren’t just about fixing problems. They helped us grow our skills as a team and learn from each other’s perspectives. In 2024, I wanted to bring that same energy to learning designers looking to level up their skills in a fun and engaging way. This time, I turned to Tim Slade’s eLearning Challenges but took a different approach. Instead of just participating, we started doing live reviews of the challenge winners. How It Works One person drives the meeting, screensharing the challenge winner’s eLearning project while recording the session. We pause at each screen and ask two simple but high-impact questions: ✅ What worked well and why? ✅ What would you do differently and why? This sparks rich discussions on everything from instructional design and accessibility to visual design and interactivity. Everyone brings their unique expertise, turning the meeting into a collaborative learning experience. Want to Try It? Here’s What You Need ✔️ A web conferencing tool with recording capabilities ✔️ Adobe Premiere Pro or a transcript tool (optional, but helpful) ✔️ A generative AI tool like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude (optional for extracting themes from discussions) After the session, we take the recording and import it into Adobe Premiere, which generates a transcript in seconds. Then, using GenAI, we pull key themes, quotes, and takeaways, turning raw discussions into actionable insights. Why This Works This approach takes learning from passive to interactive. It's about clarity. 7 agile guardrails that transformed their culture: 1. The Failure Budget 📊 ↳ Set explicit failure expectations (4-5 learning failures per quarter) ↳ Track and celebrate failure conversion to learning ↳ My Olympic coach required "planned failure days" to push our limits 2. The Decision Authority Matrix 🔍 ↳ Map decisions by impact (minor/major) and reversibility (easy/hard) ↳ Assign clear decision rights by level ↳ Eliminate approval chains for minor, reversible decisions 3. The Safety Question Rotation 🔄 ↳ One safety question at the start of every meeting ↳ "What's the riskiest assumption we're not challenging?" ↳ "What are we afraid to say out loud about this project?" 6. The Gradual Release Framework 📈 ↳ Map skill development in three stages: watch, collaborate, lead ↳ Progress measure: "What decisions can they make without me?" ↳ Growth happens at the edge of ability, not in comfort 7. The Bounded Autonomy System 🛠️ ↳ Define clear boundaries, not detailed procedures ↳ "These 3 outcomes matter; how you get there is your call" ↳ If it fails, fix the guardrails, not the people Their transformation results: ✅ Decision speed increased 3x in six weeks ✅ Junior talent took ownership of critical projects ✅ Innovation quality improved 27% by their internal metrics The performance paradox: Freedom without structure creates anxiety.     I, recently, was involved with the AfDB’s #YEIB project in Ethiopia, & in one of the session focused on the #Ethiopian market, a powerful question was raised: How do we ignite an innovative culture within our MSMEs? The question was not about just survival, rather about equipping them with the skill sets to consistently generate new ideas, adapt, & truly compete. We're talking about a transformation, moving to sustainable growth by embracing digital tools, data analytics, & collaborative ecosystems. Ultimately helping them build resilience, & create massive value in a dynamic market like Ethiopia, making MSMEs irresistible to investors, effectively de-risking their future.   That question sent me on a deep search. I knew the answer wasn't waiting for some mystical spark or a stroke of '#innate_genius.' The real secret to #breakthrough_innovation lies in cultivating learnable behavior, what the experts have powerfully defined as #Innovation_DNA.   Research Indicates…   A rigorous Harvard Business Review (HBR) research into the world's most successful entrepreneurial executives cracked the code. They identified five-key '#discovery_skills' that fundamentally distinguish the world's top innovators.   The Exciting Part…   They were NOT #innate_traits, but powerful behaviors one can practice, master, & embed into one’s daily life. This is the pragmatic, exciting path to innovation for all of us!   The five '#discovery_skills' :   1.#Associating - The Innovator's Superpower.     One of the most powerful applications of AI in education may not be content generation. It may be simulation. At Keiser University, we have begun experimenting with the use of AI-powered avatars and simulated environments designed to help students engage in practical, experiential learning scenarios. And early results look promising. ⸻ Imagine students interacting with AI-driven avatars simulating: * patients in clinical distress * counseling sessions * leadership crises * difficult interpersonal conversations * business negotiations * real-world decision-making environments Not as static chatbots. But as dynamic learning experiences designed to strengthen: * communication * judgment * critical thinking * procedural reasoning * and confidence under pressure ⸻ For decades, one of the biggest challenges in professional education has been scaling experiential learning. Clinical placements are limited. Simulation environments are expensive. Real-world exposure can vary dramatically. AI has the potential to help bridge some of these gaps. ⸻ At Keiser, we are exploring how AI-enabled simulations can supplement traditional instruction and provide students with additional opportunities to practice in realistic, responsive environments before entering high-stakes professional settings. A nursing student can work through patient communication scenarios. A counseling student can practice difficult conversations. A business student can navigate conflict and leadership situations. The goal is not to replace faculty, clinical experience, or hands-on learning. The goal is to expand access to meaningful practice and preparation. ⸻ Of course, this must be approached thoughtfully. These tools need: * strong pedagogy * faculty oversight * ethical guardrails * and clear learning objectives Because simulation without rigor risks creating performance instead of competence. ⸻ But when integrated intentionally, AI may become one of the most important tools we have for expanding experiential learning at scale. Not by replacing human instruction.
